Introduction Into The NHS

“It’s the best role you can get – it opens lots of doors for you.” Yusuf, healthcare support worker

Why The NHS?

The NHS was set up in 1948 to provide everyone in the UK with healthcare based on their needs, and not on their ability to pay. It is a national institution and respected throughout the world for the standard of care it gives to patients.

More people work for the NHS than any other organisation in the country: over 1 million people in England alone. There are over 350 different career opportunities with roles to suit all interests and qualifications.

The NHS is now recruiting for a range of roles, including healthcare support workers. They also provide a huge range of apprenticeships.

Healthcare support workers

Healthcare support workers assist patients every day, sharing their experience and making a real difference in their journey back to health. They are a key part of a multi-disciplinary team, working under the supervision of a healthcare professional, such as a nurse.

It’s a hands-on role where one minute you might be taking blood and the next lending an ear to an anxious patient, but it’s one of the most rewarding career choices you can make. Healthcare support worker roles also offer great career progression, providing the experience needed to apply for training as a registered healthcare professional (such as a nurse or midwife).

Apprenticeships

The NHS also offers apprenticeships into many of the more than 350 NHS careers through a mix of on-the-job training and classroom learning. These apprenticeships provide the opportunity to earn, learn and make a real difference.

Apprenticeships range across all levels including degrees, and many lead to nationally recognised and regulated roles. They provide a great opportunity to start a career in fields including nursing, radiography or occupational therapy.

"I’d encourage anyone interested in nursing to apply. After nine months the bond I have with the other students and lecturers is incredible." Adam Cramp: Mental health nursing degree apprenticeship
