Technical Control Apprentice - 2024

C&I is one of only two ’critical trades’ at AWE and is vital to the successful delivery of our programme of work. Put simply, C&I Engineers enable a wide range of different automated processes to run. To help you understand the technology you will be writing about and to give you the skills and expertise to become a specialist author, you will spend three years studying Control and Instrumentation (C&I).

For more than 70 years, AWE has been continuously keeping our nation safe: supporting the UK Government’s nuclear defence strategy and the Continuous At Sea Deterrent. They also use their nuclear know-how and technical expertise to provide innovative solutions that support the UK’s counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction activities.

They are a team of around 6,500 people – proud to be part of such an important mission and proud of their responsibilities to the Ministry of Defence and our country.

AWE create and maintain a safe operating culture where safety is front and centre of everything they do. From building state-of-the-art facilities to supporting Production, Science, Engineering and Technology programmes, their commitment to the environment, safety, and the wellbeing of their people underpins all activities at AWE.

If you want to work in a unique and innovative environment, then AWE is the perfect place for you.

Do you want to be part of something extraordinary? Something that not only gives you the opportunity to develop and grow your career, but offers excitement, challenge and intrigue at the same time as making a difference to keeping our country, and everyone in it, safe?

What if you could work on something that you can’t test… but cannot afford to fail? That could have spent years on a submarine, is launched into outer space (where the temperature is below -250c); comes hurtling through the atmosphere, being heated up and shaken and then must work? Some challenge.

What AWE do is unique and so are the people who work there. They have some of the best in the business and people are truly their most valued asset. They work to attract, motivate, develop and retain the best talent and equip people with the right skills for the future.

Not only has studying an apprenticeship opened up so many different opportunities for me for future career endeavours but it allows to complete my studies whilst working in a hands-on, practical and highly technical environment. Of course, I can’t forget about being able to earn while I learn! I’m glad I chose to do an apprenticeship with AWE at the same level as I’m able to really consolidate what I know whilst expanding my skills continuously. - Matthew, Level 3 Mechanical Maintenance, Aged 20

I studied Maths, Physics and Computer Science at 6th form which gave me the theoretical knowledge, but it was this apprenticeship that raised my practical knowledge up to the same level. Without it I wouldn’t have the confidence and quality in my work to meet the standards of AWE and start my career in the professional engineering world. After completing my apprenticeship in Mechatronics, I am specialising in electronics where the company is paying for me to go and complete my degree achieving the same standard as a level 6 apprenticeship. - Chris, Level 3 Mechatronics Maintenance, Aged 20
