About MTC

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) has been established to prove innovative manufacturing processes and technologies in an agile environment in partnership with industry, academia and other institutions.

The MTC houses some of the most advanced manufacturing equipment in the world, creating a high quality environment for the development and demonstration of new technologies on an industrial scale. This provides a unique opportunity for manufacturers to develop new and innovative processes and technologies.

The MTC’s members include global manufacturing companies from multiple sectors. The MTC was founded collaboratively by the University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham, Loughborough University and TWI Ltd.

The MTC is a diverse and rapidly growing business, we now employ over 450 people at our Ansty Park campus just outside Coventry. This growth is set to continue.

We have already won national recognition for our success in developing the engineers of the future and for displaying the highest standards of excellence in employing apprentices. 22% of MTC employees are currently apprentices, graduates or on sponsored (YINI) placements, which has qualified the centre for membership of the 5% Club. This demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that at least 5% of its workforce are enrolled on formalised apprentice, sponsored student, or graduate development schemes.

A day in the life of an MTC apprentice

“Completing an apprenticeship makes you more employable as you already have work-based learning and experience in the real world.

Also, there is always the opportunity to go to university or complete other further/higher education qualifications as part of, or after, you finish your apprenticeship. The MTC puts a lot of time and effort into its apprenticeship programmes and gives so many opportunities to its students.

We will be learning on some of the best equipment in the country and the skills we are developing are so varied that this apprenticeship opens up pathways for a range of careers, not just one profession.

I’m so thankful for having the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship, I’m learning so much and I can see an exciting future and career ahead of me.”

Kerry Smith, 2nd Year Apprentice

Lloyds Bank is the largest private sector contributor to the centre and is contributing £5m over 5 years as part of its commitment to support the UK manufacturing industry and to help tackle the sector’s shortfall in skills.

The bank’s contribution will support over 1,000 trainees, in line with the Group’s ‘Helping Britain Prosper’ plan; as well as helping the UK realise its potential in advanced manufacturing.

Our Patrons also include Bosch Rexroth, DMG MORI, Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, Siemens and Multipix Imaging.
