Description

Core apprenticeship responsibilities and tasks of the role:

Undertake a course of studies and develop a broad range of skills within the requirements of the service to achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 Apprenticeship.

To maintain regular contact with the appointed Support Advisor during the period of the Apprenticeship.

Under supervision work closely with other team members to assist in team objectives.Understand own role which could include supervision of others or undertaking project work.

Operate as an effective and reliable team member to achieve own accountabilities and team objectives.

Ensure own work area is in good / safe condition and take action as appropriate to reduce / minimise risks to self and others, reporting issues where necessary.

Undertake any Health and Safety Training relevant to them and wear protective equipment and clothing where required.

To use IT packages effectively, updating and maintaining computerised systems as required to ensure the Service performs successfully.

To ensure a positive and flexible approach to the variety of tasks and work patterns within the role. All shortlisted candidates will have to undertake:

  • The bleep test on the 30th May
  • Written test on the 5th June
  • Practical Tests on the 12th June

The successful applicants will undertake an initial training course in October 2017: a 7-8 week non-residential course which is assessed.

  • Knowledge of Cornwall, including the risks and vulnerable people within our communities.
  • Ability to present information to a wide range of people, for example from school children to Elected Members
  • Eligible for funding to undertake an apprenticeship framework or standard (eligibility is based on qualifications/skills already attained).
  • Willing to undertake a programme of work, study and training designed to develop the skills and abilities of the apprentice to achieve a Level 3 qualification in Emergency Fire Service Operations or equivalent apprenticeship Standard.
  • Ability to communicate with others in a range of media e.g. face to face, telephone and email in order to give and receive information accurately.
  • Ability to organise own allocated workload with line management support to deliver targets and deadlines.
  • Demonstrates ability to work on own initiative and work effectively as part of a wider team.
  • Understanding of general office IT applications including all Microsoft Office.
  • GCSE maths C or above
  • GCSE English C or above

Specific responsibilities and tasks of the apprentice firefighter role:

Inform and educate your community to improve awareness of fire and rescue safety matters

  • Promote safety matters to inform your community
  • Facilitate learning through demonstration and instruction

Take responsibility for effective performance in fire and rescue

  • Take responsibility for personal performance
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with people
  • Develop your own skills to improve performance

Save and preserve endangered life

  • Conduct a search to locate life involved in incidents
  • Rescue life involved in incidents
  • Provide treatment to casualties
  • Support people involved in rescue operations

Resolve fire and rescue operational incidents

  • Control and extinguish fires
  • Resolve incidents other than those involving fire or hazardous materials
  • Support people involved in an operational incident

Protect the environment from the effects of hazardous materials

  • Mitigate damage to the environment from hazardous materials
  • Decontaminate people and property affected by hazardous materials
  • Support people involved in hazardous materials incidents

Support the effectiveness of operational response

  • Collect information on risks in your community
  • Collect information on resources in your community
  • Maintain internal resources FF7 Support the development of colleagues in fire and rescue
  • Communicate your own skills and knowledge to colleagues
  • Support development of colleagues

Contribute to fire safety solutions to minimise risks to your community

  • Inspect premises to minimise risks to people, property and the environment
  • Report on issues arising from an inspection FF9 Drive, manoeuvre and redeploy fire and rescue vehicles
  • Drive vehicles to incidents
  • Manoeuvre, site and re-deploy vehicles
  • Taking responsibility for your work, your environment and your development.

  • Paying attention to your own health, safety and wellbeing and that of others.
