The role will include supporting young people with personal care needs throughout the school day. This includes toileting, dressing/feeding and drinking.

Detailed Job Description

New Bridge School are looking to appoint a School Personal Care Assistant. The successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels. We are looking for a reliable, flexible individual who has a passion working in schools.

Candidates should be passionate about working with children and have a real desire to improve standards of learning in school.

Support for Young People

  • Establish rapport and respectful, trusting relationships with young people, acting as a role model and setting high expectations.
  • Promote inclusion and acceptance of all.
  • Assess the needs of young people and use detailed knowledge of personal care needs to support them.
  • Ensure safety, welfare and personal hygiene. (Basic First aid to be included where appropriate).
  • Promote self-esteem and independence and employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance.
  • Provide specific feedback in discussion with young people on their progress and achievement, in line with school policy.
  • To maintain and develop high standards of personal care under the direction of the Director of Care and/or management team within the school.
  • To assist with the supervision and feeding of pupils and students during the lunch time period.
  • To contribute to the overall development of the school and its young people by attending and contributing to staff meetings and training where appropriate.
  • To understand the importance of inclusion, equality and diversity, both when working with children and with colleagues, and to promote equal opportunities for all.
  • To uphold and promote the values and the ethos of the school.
  • To implement and uphold the policies, procedures and codes of practice of the School, including relating to customer care, finance, data protection, ICT, health & safety, anti-bullying and safeguarding/child protection.
  • To take a pro-active approach to health and safety, working with others in the school to minimise and mitigate potential hazards and risks, and actively contribute to the security of the school, e.g. challenging a stranger on the premises.
  • To participate and engage with workplace learning and development opportunities, subject to the school’s training plan, working to continually improve own performance and that of the team/school.
  • To attend and participate in relevant meetings as appropriate.
  • To undertake any other additional duties commensurate with the grade of the post.

**PLEASE NOTE** applicants must fulfil certain criteria in order to be eligible for apprenticeship training.

New Bridge School are working in partnership with Aspire Education Academy who will deliver the formal training as a legal requirement of the apprenticeship.

No formal qualifications are required

Skills required

No formal experience are essential however previous have a keen interest in schools.

Skills and Qualifications

  • The ability to lift manually and with any hoist equipment provided (after training).
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
  • The confidence to work on and off site with young people.
  • The ability to work to deadlines.
  • The ability to communicate, both orally and in written form, with a range of parties including parents, teachers and classroom support assistants and para-medical staff.
  • The ability to feed and supervise young people (after training).

Additional Information

Training provided

Candidates will be required to undertake 1 paid education day per month at school. Candidates will also have 3 more contacts per month with their tutor through a variety of mediums including – observations, webinars, phone calls, review meetings and distance learning.

  • Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools.
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT
