Borough of Poole is the unitary authority responsible for local government in the Poole, Dorset, England. It was created on 1 April 1997 following a review by the Local Government Commission for England (1992), becoming administratively independent from Dorset County Council.[1] Its council comprises 16 wards and 42 councillors and is controlled by a Conservative administration. Due to the councils structure they has become available a position for an apprentice in the heavy goods transport department , this will involve a varied work on both heavy and light good vehicles on the depots 300 vehicles including Plant machinery. This depot has a long history of employing apprentices and in fact one of them attained the award for Best apprentice . Detailed Job Description

This varied role will offer training & experience to service and repair vehicles and equipment ranging from handheld strimmers to ride on mowers, tractors and excavators and from car derived vans to rubbish collection vehicles. Time will be spent mainly with plant machinery although there are plenty of opportunities for involvement with motor vehicles.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Safely use tools in the workplace
  • Service & repair engines
  • Service and repair brakes

This is an exciting opportunity, within a supportive environment for an apprentice to gain practical experience working on all types of mobile plant, mechanical handling machinery and motor vehicles. The apprentice will undertake a level 2 Apprenticeship in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. This will involve weekly day release to Paragon Skills where you will gain a Level 2 Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles.

The working week is Monday to Friday.

Qualifications required

Ideally have achieved a minimum of a D (or equivalent) in Maths and English GCSE’s

Skills required

  • Be able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Be well organised and able to work calmly to achieve deadlines
  • Be committed to delivering high quality services to improve quality of life for people and businesses of Poole
  • Be physically capable of the work to be completed

Personal Qualities

  • Be interested in working and training to become a vehicle technician
  • Ideally have achieved a minimum of a D (or equivalent) in Maths and English GCSE’s
  • Be passionate and show pride about the work you do

Future prospects

Successful apprentices will lead to the opportunity to progress onto a level 3 apprenticeship and gain an NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills.

All training will be delivered by a combination of work place training & assessment and attending one day a week at our Bournemouth campus. You will be mentored by experienced members of staff while developing your skills to a nationally recognised industry standard.

The current Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW) is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
