Northshore Shipyard has been established since 1971. From our delightful setting in Chichester Harbour, this ideal location is perfect for keeping your yacht all year round. The harbour is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a superb base to visit some of the prettiest places along the South Coast, with easy access to the Solent, Isle of Wight and English Channel.

Our work is carried out by qualified engineers to ensure your electrical and mechanical components are kept in top condition. With our expert knowledge within the industry, replacement parts can be sourced and ordered quickly. Our skilled craftsmen can repair damages to hull and deck, interior joinery, metalwork and engineering problems.

The company is now looking to develop a new workforce and looking for apprentices to carry on the high standard of repair work that is carried out at the boatyard , they have requested that the possible candidates be placed on the new Apprenticeship standard course , and will receive the best possible training for a career in the marine industry.

Detailed Job Description

While completing a boatbuilding apprenticeship, you will learn all aspects of boatbuilding and repairing small boats. You will be working alongside an experienced workforce learning skills in:

  • Woodwork
  • GRP - Glass-reinforced plastic
  • Lamination
  • Cabin refits and repairs
  • Keels replacement and repair
  • Preparation techniques
  • General joinery repairs on boats

The working week will be Monday to Friday.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

Ideally you should have 5 GCSE’s at A to C grade, however, this is not essential as you will be assessed on Maths and English.

Skills required

  • Must have a keen interest in the Marine Sector
  • Be able to work as part of a team
  • Able to work with hand tools
  • good at technical activities.

Personal Qualities

  • Motivated to work hard and learn
  • be patient and have good attention to detail
  • good time management

Future prospects

Initially on a Level 2 boatbuilding apprenticeship, you will continue to complete your Level 3 in years 3 and 4. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, a full time position could be on offer for the right candidate.

We have the ENERGY & EXPERIENCE to give you the EDGE in kick starting your career. Our Industry leading Personal Tutor will deliver outstanding teaching and learning to help ENERGISE you to complete your apprenticeship training and leave you confident to EXECUTE tasks to the highest standard.

Our experienced Marine centre in Fareham is currently the only approved centre for delivering this exciting apprenticeship.

During this apprenticeship standard you will complete:

Foundation Phase (months 1-18)

  • Level 2 Foundation Diploma in Boat Building
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths & English

Development Phase (months 18-36)

  • Level 3 Diploma in Boatbuilding

At the end of your studies you will complete an end point assessment, this will include demonstrating repair techniques to a wooden vessel, producing an FRP component and a VIVA competency based interview regarding the work completed during your 4 year apprenticeship.

The current Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW) is £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. PLEASE NOTE – candidates who meet the employer’s criteria will be put forward for interview as soon as possible, this means that the vacancy could be filled before the advertised closing date.
