Detailed Job Description

The production of security gates, fixtures and fittings, requires the fabrication and welding of components. An apprentice is required to help meet the growing need for the company’s products. The role involves fabricating and welding metal components. Also measuring and cutting metal, to the required sizes, according to detailed drawings. Additional activities might include assembling systems and visiting sites. On occasions some labouring on site will be required to help other team members install new gates and other systems.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

None, although Maths and English will need to be passed at Level 2 before the end of the qualification.

Skills required

Able to work with heavy and often dirty materials, mainly steel. Desire to see products finished well.

Personal Qualities

Polite, well-mannered with good customer service skills, or able to learn theses skills. Training will be given.

Future prospects

The company is growing because of the quality of its products and increased demand in the building industry in the South West. As the company grows it may require further specialisation in different structures and materials. Suitable candidates will receive further training.

Additional Information

Training provided

The new standard requires a detailed training plan to be drawn up with the employer. In general this relates to welding and fabricating using MIG/MAG and TIG on Mild Steel and Stainless steel.

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.50 per hour. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age.
