An excellent opportunity has arisen for an aspiring Accountant to join Greenwood Academies Trust as an Apprentice Finance Assistant. You will gain hands on accounts experience whilst studying towards the AAT qualification.

The Greenwood Academies Trust (GAT) currently has 32 open academies educating approximately 16,000 pupils across seven local authority areas including Nottingham City, Nottinghamshire, Leicester City, Northamptonshire, Peterborough, Lincolnshire and Central Bedfordshire.

The Trust was formed in 2009 by the Governing Body of the outstanding Greenwood Dale School in Nottingham. Greenwood Dale was one of the first two schools in the country to be allowed to set up its own Foundation to sponsor Academies.

Detailed Job Description

Duties will include:

  • Posting of invoices – for Trust purchases
  • Processing of income receipts
  • Preparing petty cash reimbursements and posting of petty cash expenses for Trust employees
  • Posting of expenses for Trust employees and monitoring of annual mileage
  • Processing of other Trust financial transactions in the finance system
  • Provision of information relating to central recharges to other academies in the Trust
  • Assist with the monthly financial review processes
  • To assist with the sorting of finance mail and response to e-mails and phone calls received for the Finance Team
  • Perform supplier statement reconciliations
  • Liaise with staff and suppliers where required to resolve invoice queries
  • Provide support to the Academies Finance Manager in academy budget preparation as required
  • Perform other related tasks to support the Education Support Finance Team, as required
  • Perform tasks in line with local procedures and Trust Financial Regulations
  • Any other duties deemed appropriate to the role
  • Undertake training and duties required to complete an externally assessed qualification
  • On-going satisfactory completion of specified training units will be monitored during your apprenticeship

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

4 or more GCSE’s at grade C or above and a minimum of grade C in Maths and English at GCSE level (or equivalent qualification).

Skills required

  • Good attention to detail
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Good numeracy skills
  • Good IT skills and competency in the use of Microsoft Office packages

Personal Qualities

  • Professional personal presentation
  • Good communication skills
  • Desire to develop within a finance role
  • Integrity - ability to deal with sensitive/confidential information in a professional manner

Future prospects

Possible progression to level 4 AAT for the right candidate.

AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting – Level 3

The Advanced Diploma in Accounting covers a range of complex accounting tasks, including maintaining cost accounting records and the preparation of reports and returns. You’ll learn and master a number of accounting disciplines including financial processes, advanced bookkeeping, final accounts and ethical practices for accountants.

  • The importance of professional ethics in the working environment
  • Use of spreadsheets to manage information in the accounting environment
  • Analysing variances
  • Reconciling ledgers
  • Making provisions for doubtful and irrecoverable debts
