Detailed Job Description

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil Engineering is part of the construction industry; it is the design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure. Infrastructure is works like roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, runways and coastal walls.

Civil Engineering is not the construction of houses or commercial buildings such as schools, hospitals, or shopping centres. Many people in the civil engineering/construction industry have started out as a General Operative before progressing into other roles so it’s a great way to start your career.

What will I be doing?

Working as an Apprentice General Operative you will be getting hands on from day one, you will be working on the Luton Direct Air to Rail transit system (Luton DART) which is due to open in 2021.

The Luton DART is being developed to improve passenger journey time and connectivity to and from the airport using a modern, sustainable and efficient system.

Currently, shuttle buses transport passengers between Parkway station and the airport. The reliability and journey time of the bus service can be affected by traffic congestion, which is difficult to predict in advance. These issues can lead to stressful and delayed journeys to the airport.

The new system will be a people-mover of the type found in major international airports around the world. Based on 21st century technology, it will be designed and operated to ensure that services are not only fast, frequent and reliable but also safe, secure and comfortable.

Once in operation, the Luton DART will be capable of operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will significantly reduce the journey time from central London to the airport terminal to about 30 minutes, using the fastest train from St Pancras International.

Its purpose is to transform the experience of those travelling to the airport by rail, and encourage more people to do so, enhancing the airport’s already impressive environmental track record and helping to reduce congestion on the roads.

As well as learning onsite you will have one day a week of classroom training in small groups with other apprentices.
