This is an exciting opportunity to start your career in Construction with major contractor Buckingham Group Contracting LTD, based on a multi-million pound Stadium project. This will set the foundations for a successful career in the industry. Buckingham Group have a strong culture of promoting from within and therefore provide an excellent start to careers in construction.

Our Apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to train primarily as an Construction Engineering Technician but with the option to progress into Site Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Buying or Estimating. You will be given the opportunity to work alongside and assist qualified professionals in these roles to really gain an understanding of each of the career paths available to you. Join us as an apprentice and after 18 months you’ll gain a nationally recognised qualification ready to begin your career in one of the most exciting industries around!

As a Construction Engineering Technician what can I expect to be doing?

You will be based on the York Community Stadium project, a new multi million pound stadium which will be the new home to York City FC & York City Knights due to open in 2019. You will have hands on experience from day one and will receive on-going training and support to enable you to play an important role in our site team.

On a daily basis you will assist to instruct our skilled workforce, maintain diaries of site activities and ensure works are carried out safely to the company’s Health and Safety procedures.

One of your primary roles will be setting out on site and communicating this information to our skilled employees. Setting out is carried out using specialist equipment and can be described as the reverse of surveying. While surveying is the process of creating maps and plans of a site or area, setting out starts with plans and ends with them being turned into reality on site. You will develop the fundamental skill of taking the information from the plans and turning it into useable information for setting out.

Construction Industry

Construction Engineering is a professional discipline that deals with the designing, planning, management and construction of projects such as stadiums, commercial buildings and houses.

Careers available in the industry construction include Engineers, Planners, Project Managers and Quantity Surveyors to name but a few.

What does a Construction Engineer do?

Engineers are construction professionals who make up site supervisory and management teams with most Engineers working predominantly outdoors. Engineers turn plans into reality and are responsible for ensuring that projects are completed to a high quality and within the given time frame. Engineers play an important role in managing health and safety on sites, as well looking after the environment.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above or equivalent is preferred. Candidates will be assessed at interview and on entry onto the programme.

Skills required

  • The candidate will need to be confident and well presented
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential to this role
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills

  • You must be keen to work outdoors
  • You must be well presented and organised
  • You should also be honest, reliable and willing to learn
  • You must be committed to completing this apprenticeship
  • A desire to learn about the Construction Industry

Future prospects

This apprenticeship programme is very much the start of an exciting career in the industry with wide ranging prospects which may span a number of roles. The initial stages of the programme will provide the essential grounding and understanding of what is a successful construction business. The successful completion of this apprenticeship will lead into a permanent role within the business.

Training provided

Level 3 Apprenticeship in Construction Contracting Operations

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices will be £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. Once you commence at the Retailer, further induction training will be supplied by the Retailer. You will also receive visits and other training from the Learning Skills Partnership representative.
