Detailed Job Description

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is looking to begin a career in Steel Stock warehousing. You will gain a recognised qualification whilst earning a great wage.

Hall & Pickles is a traditional and extremely busy Steel Stockist with a factory environment that reflects the industry it serves. As a warehouse apprentice you will work as part of an established team to load and unload steel lengths, pipe and flats from articulated vehicles using overhead cranes and jigs. Loading and unloading stock will require you to safely ascend and decend the delivery vehicles, which when fully loaded can be in excess of 3 meters high.

Your duties will include but will not be limited to:

  • To receive instructions from Foreman in respect of work schedules and to satisfy job outputs.
  • To unload incoming wagons using fork lift trucks, overhead cranes and slings.
  • To store steel in the designated Warehouse Bay(s) and to ensure product is stacked in line with working practices.
  • To take customer orders and load steel onto wagons for onward delivery and ensure correct paperwork is completed.
  • To cut lengths of steel using automated saws for customer special orders.To ensure Health & Safety of all areas of work compiles with current HSE regulations.
  • To utilise all Personal Protective equipment as instructed.Ensure compliance with fire regulations and fire drills.
  • Ensure that all plant defects are reported to Line Manager.
  • To ensure security of stock, storage, accessibility, and to reduce stock wastage.To undertake stock checks when required.
  • To participate in regular training on specific job requirements, health and safety etc.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

No formal qualifications are required although English and Maths GCSE grade D or above would be an advantage.

Skills required

  • A good attitude is the primary focus, extensive on the job training will be given.
  • You will be required to work at heights for sustained periods of the working day which you should consider as an applicant.
  • The role requires continued manual lifting, handling and cutting of steel stock

Personal Qualities

Great team work, strong attention to detail and willingness to be successful.

Future prospects

Chance to progress to Supervisory level.

Additional Information

Training provided

The successful applicant will join a structured Semta Apprenticeship Service Intermediate Apprenticeship, where they will complete a Level 2 NVQ Diploma relevant to their job role, a Level 2 Technical Certificate at a local College, ERR, Level 1 Functional Skills in Communication and Application of Number (if required) and PLTS.

On completion of the Apprenticeship programme, there may be an opportunity to progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship.
