Hobsons is a medium sized independent accountancy practice with 2 offices, in Nottingham and Newark. The vacancy is in the Newark office only. Hobsons specialises in working with owner managed businesses, together with some larger companies and groups, providing a full package of book-keeping, accountancy, audit and tax services to these clients. Clients are predominantly in the East Midlands, although some are further afield.

Detailed Job Description

The position will cover the following areas:

  • Preparing accounts for limited companies, sole traders and partnerships
  • General data input on various packages, including Sage 50, Quickbooks Xero and Sage One
  • Balancing bank and cash accounts
  • Completion of VAT returns and reports
  • General office duties as required

The role will require contact with clients on a regular basis through telephone calls, email and face to face.

The role will predominantly be office based, although some work at client’s premises may be required on an occasional basis.

There will be a 6 monthly salary reviews for progression.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

5 GCSEs at A* - C grade (or equivalent) are essential including as a minimum Mathematics and English Language.

A levels would be desirable but not essential.

Skills required

  • Working knowledge of Excel and Word will be an advantage
  • Some previous experience with bookkeeping packages such as Sage 50, Quickbooks, Sage One or Xero would be desirable but not essential

  • Confidence with meeting/speaking to new people/clients and strong communication by telephone, email and face to face
  • Genuine interest in accounting and business advisory sector

Future prospects

This apprenticeship will take the successful candidate through Level 3 of AAT with progression to completing Level 4 qualification with the AAT. The apprenticeship may start with either Level 2 or Level 3 depending on experience.

The company is both an ACA (ICAEW) and ACCA training office and can offer progression onto these qualifications to the right candidate. Opportunities exist for progression to more senior roles in the firm.

Additional Information

Training provided

You will cover a range of complex accounting tasks, including maintaining cost accounting records and the preparation of reports and returns. You’ll learn and master a number of accounting disciplines including financial processes, advanced bookkeeping, final accounts and ethical practices for accountants.

Units include:

  • The importance of professional ethics in the working environment
  • Use of spreadsheets to manage information in the accounting environment
  • Analysing variances
  • Reconciling ledgers
  • Making provisions for doubtful and irrecoverable debts
