Detailed Job Description

Our apprentices would be working towards the NVQ Level 2 in General Construction Operations Ground Works Apprenticeship at South and City College Birmingham.

This would be on a day release basis in Bordesley Green in Birmingham, which would typically be one day a week for approximately 18-24 months.

Working within a construction gang, you would work as a general operative and be site based for 4 days each week. Depending on the location of the site you are working on would determine your start and finish time.

We would envisage that you would be picked up early from home by the site team and would be dropped off at the end of the working day. This could be from as early as 06:30am. Time on site typically would be 07:30-16:30. Whilst on site you will have the exposure of working with an experienced gang, you will observe the role of your colleagues, work under supervision from the foreman.

Duties are not limited but may include assisting with:-General Labouring including tidying up Site Installation of footings Setting out of levels Digging, excavating and concreting foundations Installing drainage and other pipework Laying appropriate ground works to include dropped kerbs, paths and roads All PPE will be given free of charge but will be the responsibility of the employee to keep safe. All additional training courses that the company decide to run and ask for employees to attend shall also be free of charge. We are keen to retain staff that we have invested in, trained and developed. A full time and permanent role would be available upon successful completion of the apprenticeship assuming that there are no issues. We have success stories of apprentices who have worked their way through to site foreman and who are now responsible for jobs and people on site. We would be very keen to keep hold of workers that had successfully obtained the qualifications through the apprenticeship scheme and see them develop and thrive within our business.

This role can be physically demanding, there are early starts and working outdoors in all weather and terrains. Learning in a slow progressive way, meaning that experience is gained over time.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

CSCS Card is desirable. A driving licence is desirable

Skills required

A good standard of English and Maths. Construction site experience, an understanding of groundworks and civil engineering is desirable.

Personal Qualities

Good work ethic, hardworking, punctual and reliable. Enthusiasm is a must. You must be flexible, adaptable and reliable.

Future prospects

We are keen to retain staff that we have invested in, trained and developed. A full time and permanent role would be available upon successful completion of the apprenticeship assuming that there are no issues.
