Detailed Job Description

Berthon has an opportunity for a Marine Rigger We have major commercial and private contracts working on Yachts and Motor boats up to 100ft LOA.

Apprentices work in a structured environment learning all aspects of

The apprentice will be involved in all aspects of rigging including:

  • Making wire rigging
  • Splicing and ropework
  • Mast tuning
  • Bending on sails
  • Slinging and lifting
  • Hydraulics
  • Using machinery
  • Fabrication
  • Working aloft

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at A*-D to include English and Maths

Skills required

  • Good practical skills
  • Some evidence of working with hands desirable
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to follow instructions, enthusiastic with good communication skills

Personal Qualities

  • A strong interest in Sailing/ Yachting/ Boating
  • A head for heights for working aloft masts
  • Commitment to work outside all year round and in all weathers

Future prospects

Additional Information

Training provided

The training you will receive:

  • PEO Level 2
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Marine Engineering – Rigging
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Marine Engineering – Rigging
  • Functional skills such as: English, Maths and ICT

Specific machinery training with experience including Forklift, Cranes and tractors

Various Berthon courses such as: Health & Safety and LEAN manufacturing as applicable.

Training will be part of the contracted hours agreed that makes up the working week.

The successful candidate will undertake an Apprenticeship including both on and off the job training.

The college training will be carried out by Brockenhurst College at the Marchwood Construction and Marine Technologies Unit on a day release basis.

"The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.40 per hour. From the 1st April 2017 this is increasing to £3.50 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training."
