We are recruiting an apprentice greenkeeper for the 2018 season. Experience isn’t essential, although good communication skills and a strong work ethic are required.

Dunstable Downs golf club is situated in Bedfordshire and has a unique 18 hole course The 100 year old golf course is situated two miles south west of Dunstable on the Whipsnade Road high on the crest of the Chiltern Hills nearly 800 feet above sea level. The Downs is famous as a beauty spot and viewpoint with a panorama taking in seven counties. The bracing air and the glorious downland turf, set in an area of outstanding natural beauty makes it an ideal spot for golf.

Detailed Job Description

Greenkeepers are an integral part of the organisation. Their focus throughout the year is providing the best possible surfaces whilst minimising disruption. Their aim is to provide a facility which exceeds expectation of our members and guests. The position involves setting up the course daily as part of a six man team.

Duties will include:

· raking bunkers,

· blowing leaves

· emptying bins

· repairing divots

· mowing turf (after receiving training)

The successful applicant would gain an NVQ qualification in sports turf through Oaklands college as well as structured training and additional benefits. This is a full time and permanent position which will involve 40 hours per week. Salary will be incentivised and competitive but will be reflective of the individuals experience within the industry.

Monday- Friday 5.30am – 2.00pm Average of 40 hours per week throughout the year with 37.5 during winter and 42.5 during summer. *Weekend shifts of 5.30am – 8.00am introduced upon employee completing probation (extra pay at an increased overtime rate)

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

A minimum of A*-D (9-3) in Maths and English GCSE or Functional Skills equivalent

Skills required

Operate machinery (following training), mechanical maintenance, grass identification

Personal Qualities

Communication, motivation, reliability, Physically capable

The sports turf industry has many jobs available. You can choose to work in golf, football, cricket, tennis and many others. This industry opens up opportunities to work overseas. International exchange programs allow qualified greenkeepers to intern at famous venues around the globe. Intermediate Level 2 Apprenticeship in Green Keeping

You will work outdoors at all times which is not always pleasant. This job requires a motivated, committed and physically fit candidate. £4.00 per hour ages 16-17 or first year of apprentice. £7.10 per hour ages 18+ or second year of apprentice. Please set as competitive
