Description

Apprenticeships with JN Bentley are hands on from the beginning; with a supportive team behind you, you will be out on site with your role growing as your confidence and skills improve.

JN Bentley is a leading civil engineering and construction company in the UK, employing over 1500 people, with an annual turnover in the region of £250 million. Apprenticeships at JN Bentley are hands-on from day one; with a dedicated mentor to support your development throughout the course, you’ll have the opportunity to work out on site and develop key skills in civil engineering and construction operations.

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil Engineering is part of the construction industry; it is the design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure. Infrastructure is works like roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, runways and coastal walls.

Civil Engineering is not the construction of houses or commercial buildings such as schools, hospitals, or shopping centres.

You’ll gain experience of working on live construction projects everything from the construction of new sewage treatment works to the upgrading of existing spillways and reservoirs. You’ll be assigned a mentor who will provide on-going support and assist in setting the day to day work.

What does a Civil Engineer do?

Civil Engineers are construction professionals who make up site supervisory and management teams with most Civil Engineers working predominantly outdoors.

Civil Engineers turn plans into reality and are responsible for ensuring that projects are completed to a high quality and within the given timeframe. Civil Engineers play an important role in managing health and safety on sites, as well looking after the environment.

As a Civil Engineering Technician Apprentice what can I expect to be doing?

Our Apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to train primarily as a Civil Engineering Technician but with the option to progress into Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Buying, Planning or Estimating. Join us as an apprentice and after 18 months you’ll gain a nationally recognised qualification ready to begin your career in one of the most exciting industries around! You will be assigned a mentor, an employee at JN Bentley who will be there throughout your training to provide support, to assist in observations, and assist in setting the day to day work.

As well as learning onsite you will have one day a week of classroom training in small groups with other apprentices.

Day to day you will be based on one or more of JN Bentley’s projects throughout your time on the apprenticeship. An example of one such project is Jackson’s Edge Service Reservoir. You can have a read below about the work JN Bentley have recently carried out.

Location: Disley, Manchester

Client: United Utilities

Value: £8.4m

Summary: A new 18ML capacity, twin compartment service reservoir built on the site of an existing 103 year old structure at Jackson’s Edge has provided increased security to the water supply network.

The new structure is the first precast service reservoir that client United utilities has ever built and the first that Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) has constructed and commissioned in two stages.

To minimise our impact on the environment and local communities during the construction of the reservoir, a ‘Design for Manufacture and Assembly’ (DfMA) approach was used. This meant that much of the structure could be manufactured off site to reduce the amount of time on site. In total, 126 wall units, 132 beams, 120 columns and 400 roof slabs were precast in factory conditions away from site before being delivered and carefully crane-lifted into position.

What are JN Bentley’s previous apprentices doing now?

Apprenticeship opportunities have been offered for a number of years at JN Bentley and have led to rewarding careers for many young people. Previous apprentice Jordon joined the company 5 years ago as an apprentice and now works as a Site Engineer whilst working towards an additional qualification in civil engineering, attending university one day a week.

Another former Apprentice at JN Bentley Tom, joined the company 7 years ago as General Construction Operative Apprentice and now works for the business as a Site Engineer. He is currently studying towards an additional qualification in civil engineering and is currently enrolled on JN Bentley’s dedicated Civil Engineering Development Scheme, working towards becoming a charted engineer with the ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers), and developing the required skills and experience needed to potentially become a future site manager.
