What is Quantity Surveying?
Quantity Surveyors play an important role in managing the commercial side of construction projects. They look for ways to minimise the total cost of the project to the business and maximise the value received, whilst still meeting the required standards and levels of quality. Our quantity surveyors split their time between working in the office and out on site, preparing payments and cost reports and managing relationships with various stakeholders.
As an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor what can I expect to be doing?
Kier has established this exciting opportunity to recruit and train their professionals of the future. By applying for this role you may secure an apprenticeship working on one of Kier’s projects.
The programme will combine practical experience and exposure to a range of key business functions such as, Estimating, Buying, Planning, Surveying and Technical. We will tailor the qualification and site placement to your option. Join us as an apprentice and after 2.5 years you’ll gain an advanced apprenticeship in construction and you’ll be ready to begin your career in one of the most exciting industries around!
You will receive on-going training and support to enable you to play an important role in one of our project teams.
Your day to day duties will include:
- Compiling tender documents
- Tender analysis
- Tender returns preparation
- Measurement of drawings for variation to a project
- Site visits for sub variation contractor valuations
- Checking site materials
You will be part of a team that turns plans into reality, ensuring the project runs smoothly, safely and on-target. You would play an important role in managing health and safety on sites, as well looking after the environment.

4 GCSE’s grades 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent including Maths, English and a Science subject
On this apprenticeship programme you will complete an Advanced Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering Technician with the CITB where you will gain:
- Level 3 Construction Diploma in Civil Engineering
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations
- Level 2 Functional Skills (maths and English)
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
- You must be well presented and organised
- You should also be honest, reliable and willing to learn
- You must be committed to completing this apprenticeship
- Be enthusiastic with a desire to learn about the Construction Industry
This is very much the start of an exciting career in the construction industry with wide ranging prospects which may span a number of roles.
The initial stages of the programme will provide the essential grounding and understanding of what is a challenging environment. As the programme progresses, depending on the role you choose to pursue, you may progress to a professionally recognised qualification providing the foundations for a career which can lead to the management of site teams.
Options include engineering, quantity surveying, site management, planning, buying, estimating, designing and many more.
Kier is committed to the long term development of their staff. The Quantity Surveyor programme is very much the start, apprentices who display the required abilities and attitude will become permanent employees.
This role may involve some travelling, specifically in order to attend the training facility to undertake your academic training, as such a driving licence would be beneficial. This apprenticeship may involve working weekends and may involve working in the evenings. A career in construction may involve being based on projects in various locations.
