Description
As an Apprentice Design Technician what will I be doing? You will support and assist with the preparation of technical solutions to engineering problems as a member of a design team and as directed.
The role will involve a wide variety of experience working within an office based team focusing on bridges and highway structures.
Key Responsibilities, which you will learn as part of the apprenticeship:
- Under supervision assist in the production of CAD drawing preparation
- The design of highway improvement and maintenance schemes which may include junction improvements, new footways and pedestrian crossings, carriageway, footway and drainage maintenance schemes or bridge inspections and bridge maintenance schemes
- Reinforced Concrete detailing
- Design calculations
- Assessment calculations
- Inspection reports
- Under supervision take ownership of own career development using company appraisal procedures and undertake additional learning
- Actively promote Health and Safety in the workplace, setting a good example to other employees and ensuring awareness of and compliance with general Health and Safety responsibilities as set out in the Health and Safety Management System
- Perform other duties as may from time to time be reasonably required
In addition to the apprenticeship training you will receive hands on experience including mentoring and coaching from experienced members of the team. On this Highways apprenticeship programme you will learn a range of skills. Following the apprenticeship programme we would expect you to have developed skills in:
- Working independently using your own initiative
- Principles of highways structure design and maintenance
- Understand safe working practices and Health and Safety regulations within the work environment
- Commercial and programming understanding
Location
You will be based at either One Angel Square in Northampton or at our Brixworth Depot depending on which design team you are working within.

Options include engineering, quantity surveying, site management, planning, buying, estimating, designing and many more.

This role may involve some travelling, specifically in order to attend the training facility to undertake your academic training, as such a driving licence would be beneficial. This apprenticeship may involve working weekends and may involve working in the evenings. A career in construction may involve being based on projects in various locations.
