Detailed Job Description

Operational Responsibilities

  • Generation and processing of all relevant paperwork relating to planning applications, appeals and committee correspondence to gain understanding of the town planning framework and processes
  • Ensuring the validity (through checking against legislation) of planning applications involving interpretation of plans, ensuring compliance of application forms and fee calculation
  • Electronic plotting of site locations by inputting data to create documentation for consultations/ notifications and advertisements
  • Validation of planning applications, including generation and issuing of hard copy correspondence and reports for consultation, acknowledgements and advertising
  • Responsible for detailing Comments/Objections on to Development Control’s computer system
  • Administration and processing of amended plans
  • Responsible for inputting, altering, amending and despatching of Planning Decisions
  • Proof reading and checking of Planning decisions (to be carried out on a co-operative basis)
  • Organisation of plans and files for Committee meetings (to be carried out on a rota basis)
  • Appeals administration
  • Handling technical enquiries from the public, Officers and elected Members, external consultees
  • upport the planners to ensure understanding of the construction technology and design in construction and civil engineering
  • Support planning officer team with any elements of the planning application, pre-application, condition discharge and appeals process, with appropriate training and as agree on a project basis.
  • Support the town planners to ensure the understanding of Health, Safety and Welfare in construction and built environment

Management / Supervisory / Team Working Responsibilities

  • To work with the Planning and Building Control team
  • Develop the ability to manage your own workload

Service Delivery

  • Endeavor to ensure work is carried out to the required standard to maintain service delivery
  • Work to the requirement timescales
  • Work within established service procedures
  • Attend development opportunities relevant to the post and the apprenticeship programme
  • To be able to multi-task To be computer literate in Microsoft Office and be willing to develop skills to use the Planning and Building Control systems
  • Have excellent communication skills for face to face and telephone contact when dealing with Planning and Building Control matters for internal and external contacts

Other To attend college on a day release to achieve an BTEC level 3 Apprenticeship in Town Planning Technical Support To undertake any other duties commensurate with the post

Normal office hours Mon to Fri 9-5, with flexible working available. 20% on the job training including up to one day per week attending college

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

A minimum of A*-C (9-4) in Maths and English GCSE or Functional Skills equivalent

  • Experience of using Microsoft office

  • To have an enthusiastic and flexible approach to work
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to work to deadlines
  • Numerate

Future prospects

Career progression opportunity to move from apprentice to Planning Assistant – Planning Officer- Senior Planner- Principal Planner and beyond. Also the opportunity to specialise in areas such as Urban Design, conservation, listed buildings or enforcement. Salary range currently £18,500 to £42,000.

Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship in Town Planning

£9,000 Yr 1 Level 3, 37 hours per week 52 weeks per year, 22 days annual leave plus bank holidays. Prior to shortlisting your application for any vacancy, your qualifications will be checked. The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is currently £3.50 per hour from 1st April 2017. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over, in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training. For more information visit: Under 18s will not be expected to work more than 40 hours. You must check how you are going to travel to the workplace, including mileage, expense and time. Your qualification results will be checked.
