Description
This role will involve working with the digital lead/information manager, key stakeholders and wider project to facilitate the implementation of digital construction throughout the business.
BIM is a gamechanger across the globe. You will create virtual models of a construction project, handling digital information. Putting your creative and IT skills to use.
Job Purpose:
This is a new and exciting role where you will turn plans into virtual reality, creating drawings using 2D and 3D software for both pre construction and operations to demonstrate to customers Kier’s technical/engineering ability as well as allowing the business to deliver projects more efficiently and profitably.
The role will involve a wide variety of experience working within an office based team.
Key Responsibilities, which you will learn as part of the apprenticeship:
Administration & Commercial
- Assist to establish LOI/LOD to meet project requirements
- Collate and prepare information to report progress of digital deliverables on projects
- Assist to collect IT (software/hardware) information for personal
- Assist in the collection of digital related training for personal
- To contribute to PQQ and bid responses
- Feedback any case study/best practice to the wider team
- Maintain awareness with respect to industry standards
- Assist to assess the supply chain with respect to BIM capability
Communication, Implementation & Technical
- Assist the digital lead to educate and raise awareness with respect to delivering digital deliverables on projects
- Develop technical skills (authoring software) to review graphical information and assist with clash detection tasks
- Develop technical skills (model viewing software) to review graphical information and assist with clash detection, coordination tasks
- Understand the function of a Common Data Environment
- Maintain the Common Data Environment across selected projects
- Develop technical/administration skills to contribute to maintaining project specific Common Data Environments
- Provide a supporting role to deliver BIM training to internal colleagues and external consultants / subcontractors
- Support the delivery of training to the supply chain
- Promote open BIM and collaborative working
- Liaise with external consultants to ensure project deliverables are maintained in accordance with the BIM Execution Plan
- Maintain a high level of communication (therefore embracing the collaborative culture of BIM) with the project team in order to solve project challenges and facilitate lean processes
- Assist project teams to overcome problems using digital techniques and methodology
What is Building information modelling (BIM)?
Building information modelling (BIM) is a process for creating and managing information on a construction project across the project lifecycle. One of the key outputs of this process is the Building Information Model, the digital description of every aspect of the built asset. This model draws on information assembled collaboratively and updated at key stages of a project. Creating a digital Building Information Model enables those who interact with the building to optimise their actions, resulting in a greater whole life value for the asset. BIM gets people and information working together effectively and efficiently through defined processes and technology.
What is the future of BIM?
The future of the construction industry is digital, and BIM is the future of design and long term facility management; it is government led and driven by technology and clear processes; and it is implementing change across all industries. As hardware, software and cloud applications herald greater capability to handle increasing amounts of raw data and information, use of BIM will become even more pronounced than it is in current projects.
In addition to the apprenticeship training you will receive hands on experience including mentoring and coaching from experienced members of the team. Following the apprenticeship programme we would expect you to have developed an understanding of the following:
- UK Government Construction Strategy and ‘BIM’ Level 2 requirements
- National and Industry Standards related to BIM
- The role of Project and Asset
- Information Models Information Management Roles in the standard (PAS1192-2:2013)
- Managing Project Information – creating processes and procedures
- The Information Delivery Cycle and how it works in practice (PAS1192-2:2013)
- The Collaborative Production of Information - creating processes and procedures
- Overview of the Common Data Environment (BS1192:2007)

Digital Engineering Technician Standard
The apprentice will receive 2-3 week intense “work ready” BIM training. NVQ on site Assessment every 8 weeks, and BTEC (Block on site delivery) for 2 weeks bimonthly.
Expected Duration
two to three years with approx. 80 days classroom based learning (2 weeks upfront in year 1)

Kier offers a variety of progression routes due to its size and geographical locations. This includes further career development programmes which support individuals to achieve professional recognition within their chosen occupation.
This apprenticeship role is guaranteed for a minimum of 24 months and on completion you will be trained and have enough experience sufficiently to become an Assistant BIM
This role will involve travelling to different locations, as such a driving licence would be beneficial. All travel costs will be covered by Kier. Training – The training will be deliver as block training, you will spend 2 weeks bimonthly at the training facility to undertake your academic training. If you have a large distance to travel to the training sessions accommodation will be provided.
