Detailed Job Description

This role presents an exciting and excellent opportunity for those wishing to start a career in local government by joining South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Customer Contact Service as an Apprentice where ‘we put the customer at the heart of everything that we do’ and for those who like a big challenge.

The customer service team delivers the front-line service for Housing Benefits and Council Tax Support. You must be motivated, confident and committed to delivering the best service to all our customers.

To deliver the best service we need the best people who can consistently meet and deliver our high standards. You must display an enthusiastic and positive demeanour at all times, be assertive and confident, be proactive in nature and demonstrate bags of common sense but also, there is a need to display empathy and tact in sensitive situations.

Successful candidates duties will include but may not be limited to the following:

  • Opening incoming post and ensuring original documents are returned promptly.
  • Downloading electronic documents from secure sites.
  • Scanning documents onto the Document Imaging system
  • Linking documents and applications including those received electronically to the claims
  • Printing and sending letters to customers for remote workers.
  • Assisting with basic benefit enquiries either by email, telephone or in person.
  • Assisting with telephone applications.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in Maths & English is preferred however not required as full on the job training will be provided.

Skills required

  • Technology and digital media are becoming more important to our daily business so you must be able to demonstrate excellent IT skills and the ability to pick-up new IT systems quickly.
  • The role involves gathering information and supporting documents to enable claims to be processed or revised. You need to be able to maintain accuracy while balancing the competing demands of the role.
  • It is important that you are a team player contributing to improving the service and ensuring the team’s targets and deadlines are met.

Future prospects

Successful candidate will have the opportunity to progress onto other positions within the council.

Additional Information

Training provided

You will achieve your Level 2 Customer Service qualification whilst gaining valuable on the job experience.
