Hello, I Am Zoya

October 2022 Ambassador of the Month

I decided to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain that hands on, real work experience that you cannot get by doing the traditional university route. And I’m someone who learns by doing which meant that the apprenticeship route was perfect for me.

Tell us more about your experience

I decided to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain that hands-on, real work experience that you cannot get by doing the traditional university route. And I’m someone who learns by doing which meant that the apprenticeship route was perfect for me. I also realised that experience you have is more valuable than getting a degree because when you apply to jobs, they look at what you can do over anything else and most entry-level jobs now require a couple of years of experience which was a further reason why I wanted to do an apprenticeship as it gives me that experience and allows me to start my career journey at an early age.

My advice would be to do research on apprenticeships and see what they can bring for you. I would also advise you to let go of the idea that getting a degree is everything as in this competitive economy, it does not mean everything anymore and a degree alone will not put you ahead of others. It’s important to keep your mind open and let go of any misconceptions or stereotypes that you may have and realise what a great opportunity apprenticeships are and what a fantastic way it is to enter the professional world at such a young age and start building your career.

I am a cross-functional apprentice which means that I get to do different rotations in various job roles within Cisco so what I do day-to-day differs depending on the rotation I’m doing. Currently, I’m working as a network engineer in Cisco’s labs where my responsibilities include creating connections between devices from topology designs, patching and configuring devices. I previously worked as a consulting engineer where I reviewed a customer's network designs as part of a major project. And I also worked as a technical solutions architect where I learnt about one of our products (Cisco Umbrella) and learnt how to deliver technical presentations about it to customers. In future rotations, I would like to explore cybersecurity teams within Cisco.
