Hello, I Am Lucy

I wanted to get a degree to be able to work in a role, but also didn’t want to return to full-time education after four years away from it – an apprenticeship seemed like the perfect solution!

Tell us more about your experience

Day-to-day I work as a quality auditor. I observe operational prerequisite checks and critical control points and conduct Environmental and Microbiological Swabbing. As part of my role, I also conduct GMPs and Internal Audits. One of the most exciting projects I’ve been a part of was when I investigated modified atmosphere packaging issues for my first year-based learning project. I also presented to the Senior Leadership Team about the work I did in the first year of my apprenticeship – it made me so proud for my work to be recognised.

I originally chose to do an apprenticeship as I had already identified the industry, I wanted to pursue a career in. I wanted to get a degree to be able to work in a role, but also didn’t want to return to full-time education after four years away from it – an apprenticeship seemed like the perfect solution! My advice for anyone considering the apprenticeship route is to just make sure you do one in an industry you want to work in long-term, it takes a lot of work! Also, just remember to take each day as it comes!

“If you choose to pursue an apprenticeship, just remember to take every day as it comes!”

I thought I would struggle to pursue a higher qualification because I don’t have many A-Levels or other college qualifications. However, with my apprenticeship, I was accepted onto the course because of my work experience and GCSE results. I am supported at work by my mentor, and there’s also another apprentice on the same course but further into their apprenticeship who’s been extremely helpful! My line manager is also really supportive. A uni, I have a course tutor and can always contact them, or the apprenticeship team, if I need help.

My long-term career goals include becoming an auditor and technical consultant within the food industry. After my apprenticeship ends, I’ll have had the opportunity to work in many different roles and departments at Avara. I’m hoping by this point I’ll have an even better idea of what I’d like to do! Though I didn’t use it to find my apprenticeship, I have often recommended it to others – it’s a very valuable resource!
