Iram has gained valuable experience and is beginning to plan her future having found a profession shed love to have a career in, this is her story.

Iram came to South and City College Birmingham two years ago as a business and administration apprentice within the college’s very own business services team. “When I was in school I had no idea about what I wanted to do. After my GCSEs I followed what everyone else seemed to be doing and sat my A-Levels – I realised a year into my studies it wasn’t the right path for me. I didn’t want to do the academic route and felt much more comfortable learning in a practical way.

I found the business apprenticeship and have now been in South and City College’s business services team for two years – I feel like I’ve found what I want to do as a career.

During my time as an apprentice I have gained qualifications as well as hands on experience. I’ve completed my level 2 in business and administration and I’ll be finishing my level 3 in October. In business services I work within the apprenticeship matching team where my role is team leader.

My general responsibilities include notifying the team on new job openings and candidates, communicating between both employers and candidates, and conducting screening processes for potential apprentices. It’s busy and a stressful workload but it’s a job I love to do. Being an apprentice means you’re able to earn money whilst training. It can be really hard to juggle your education with a part time job, but an apprenticeship is the best of both – the student experience and earning a living.

I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to others – if you’re like me and are looking for a more hands on way to learn then they might be the thing for you. I’ve loved my time as an apprentice and it’s given me the direction to where I want to go in the future.

I’m planning to start my degree with the Open University soon as I really would love to hold a managerial role within the recruitment sector as an end goal. My apprenticeship has given me the focus and confidence in myself now to make my goals a reality."
