Spinning Earth wool Ashford

The woolshed is looking to give opportunities for young and older participants to gain work experience in the creation of sustainable textiles in a ‘lamb to label’ process. Ideally participants will have a strong focus on environmental issues and be interested in making a difference in moving away from fast fashion and plastics in the textiles industry – this is a small scale revolution! The list of task below broadly lay out the processes available for the participants to learn and be involved in. However I am interested not only in dictating tasks that have to be done but exploring what ea...

Description of Opportunity

Obviously the normal disciplines of punctuality and ability to stick to a task and achieve a reasonable output are an expectation. Kindness and positivity in the workplace is everyone’s responsibility to look after each other’s mental health and it is hoped that by building a mix of ages, there will be a cross pollination of experiences, encouragements and knowledge. We are trying to build a community environment. Clothing at the woolshed should be comfortable and not your best, raw materials can be grubby. Short nails, tied back hair and no hanging jewellery or fabrics, these could all get caught in machinery and cause injury and damage to equipment.

Tasks in the creative process:

1) Raw fleeces coming in from the farm have to be sorted and graded into barrels ready for washing – this is not for the squeamish the natural dirt, greases and vegetation in varying degrees is still in the fleece at this point. There is much to learn at this stage however as fleece breeds, age, health and environment all have a part to play in the quality and diversity of the fibres and it is at this stage that it is determined the direction of its ultimate usage. 2) Washing fibres. This is a four cycle process punctuated by water extraction – good for upper body strength. You will be manipulating two or three loads through the wash cycle simultaneously, making the most of the hot water cycles and eco soap supplies. 3) Picking open the fibres – This is a process which happens once the fleece is dry and involves a mean piece of kit that looks like it comes from the torcher dungeons!! It’s a swing picker with large spikes that pass each other – health and safety training will be given. 4) Drum carding – not as mean as the picker but still with health and safety training, this electric or hand cranked version combes the fibres around a drum which is then pealed off into a usable alignment of fibres called a batt. This is either lay out for fabric or to spin into yarn. 5) Operating the feltloom. This equipment turns the fibres into felted fabric via means of hundreds of barbed needles which are encased behind feed rollers. The operator has a hand in the design and even quality of the resulting fabric 6) Pattern cutting – we are developing a number of products that are now entering production – you will be guided on fabric choice and arrangement on pieces in the job list. Working with paper patterns 7) Construction sewing –after training on the use of a sewing machine you will be working from a job try to construct multiple similar seams for a consistent finish. 8) Knitting machine operation – you will build knowledge from simple straight fabrics to more complex construction. 9) Organisation and cleanliness of the workplace is key to workflow – All will be expected to hoover and wash down surfaces to keep the dust fibres at bay. An awareness of health and safety will be encouraged 10) Packaging and branding of orders 11) Any creative mind will be encourage to be involved in setting up photo shoots, writing copy for magazines and social media stories, create a blog? Visiting the farm for grass roots knowledge and pictures of the origins of our fibres, attend and help at markets festivals and exhibitions as and when they happen.

As you can see we have a broad base of activities in which to foster team work, communication; numeracy and literacy skills, build confidence and promote self-esteem. There are tasks which could suit some disabilities but dexterity and arm function is kind of fundamental to all tasks, as is a good eye for detail.
