Description of Opportunity

Apprentices will be paid National Minimum Wage for their age during their first year at HETA. During years 2, 3 and 4 apprentices will receive the real living wage.

They will be responsible for the quality of their own work, possibly others’ and ensuring the work is completed safely, meets stakeholder quality, time and budget requirements, whilst maintaining the efficient running of plant and equipment.


Core responsibilities:

  • Position, assemble, install and dismantle mechanical plant and equipment which will include pumps, valves, gearboxes, pipework, to agreed specifications
  • Carry out planned, unplanned and preventative maintenance procedures on mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Replace, repair and/or remove components in mechanical plant and equipment and ensure its return to operational condition.
  • Diagnose and determine the cause of faults in mechanical plant and equipment

Hydrogen Cylinder Fill Activities, to include but not limited to:


  • To safely control the filling activity on site, which includes moving and coupling cylinders to fill points and loading into pallets.
  • To control the loading activity through use of Fork lift truck
  • Complete process documentation in legible and indelible fashion
  • Analysis starting and finished product for compliance with specification
  • Receive incoming product and check for conformity
  • Raise operational issues which affect the manufacturing capability or the product purity to the responsible person
  • To take on additional duties as allocated by the manager/supervisor (i.e vehicle checking, stock counts, etc)
  • Work alongside OSC operators as required as the on-site local team representative
  • To have knowledge of site operations for troubleshooting
  • Completion of plant logbooks and OSC communications


Maintenance responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all production / operating facilities are maintained to a safe and serviceable condition, so that they can consistently attain their performance targets
  • Ensure compliance to site statutory, mechanical integrity & preventative maintenance programmes
  • Work with technical staff and plant management to solve plant and equipment problems as they arise in the most effective way.
  • Carry out routine maintenance activities & rectification of defects in a timely manner.
  • Support corrective maintenance work associated with plant and equipment failures (breakdowns)
  • Work with SAP, GMM (Global Materials Management) & Mechanical Supervisor, ensure correct spares parts inventory management
  • Actively participate in the planning and execution of planned major maintenance activities, such as plant shutdowns.
  • Provide local technical support where appropriate to your trade discipline and subsequent training and development, for the completion of small projects on site.
  • Provide supervision to the local mechanical maintenance team (i.e. GD Man), visiting euro-maintenance mechanical technicians and contractors.
  • Identify and be actively involved in development and execution of maintenance related productivity ideas.

All engineering skills will be taught at the HETA Training Centre in Hull. HETA start apprentices from the very basics, building their skills throughout the first year to meet the core objectives expected. HETA provide real skills will real experience.

HETA's entry requirements are a minimum of 4 GCSES- Grades 5-9 (or A*-C) in:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Science
  • Additional GCSE

During the first year of a HETA apprenticeship, learners will be based at the HETA training centre. The first 8 months, learners will undertake a multi-skilled engineering programme including Mechanical and Electrical engineering. The last 3 months will consist of undertaking specialised training in Electrical engineering.

  • 4 days a week in a practical workshop
  • 1 day a week in a classroom based environment underpinning knowledge to complete a Level 3 qualification.


In years 2 and 3, apprentices will spend the remainder of their time of the HETA programme at Air Products. During this time, apprentices will be assessed via:

  • Portfolio work based assessments
  • Engineering Assessor to review apprentices progression in sponsored company (help with support and mentoring)
  • End Point Assessments (final assessment for an apprentice to ensure that they can do the job they have been training for- Skills, Knowledge and Behaviour)
