Description of Opportunity

Primarily working alongside the Senior Design Engineer on a daily basis to learn all aspects of the job, with additional training from other staff to increase knowledge and experience in manufacturing/installation and maintenance to benefit the design role. External training will be provided if necessary.


  • Laying out, designing and detailing of buildings, manufacturing machinery, equipment and guarding
  • Performing proof calculations (where necessary) to ensure design integrity
  • Specification of appropriate materials and engineering components
  • Production of engineering drawings suitable for both in-house & external manufacture of both fabricated and machined parts
  • Printing and copying of drawings
  • On-site measuring surveys
  • Liaising with in-house and external workshop facilities during manufacture of parts
  • Revision of existing drawings following site changes/improvement requests

  • GCSE grades 5 and above in mathematics and science
  • Inherent interest in mechanical engineering and design
  • Good computer skills with basic awareness of CAD software, both 2D and 3D
  • Practical/hands-on ability advantageous, with a basic awareness of fabrication and machining processes

HETA's entry requirements are a minimum of 4 GCSES- Grades 5-9 (or A*-C) in:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Science
  • Additional GCSE

During the first year of a HETA apprenticeship, learners will be based at the HETA training centre. The first 8 months, learners will undertake a multi-skilled engineering programme including Mechanical and Electrical engineering. The last 3 months will consist of undertaking specialised training in Electrical engineering.


4 days a week in a practical workshop

1 day a week in a classroom based environment underpinning knowledge to complete a Level 3 qualification.



In years 2 and 3, apprentices will spend the remainder of their time of the HETA programme at Plasmor. During this time, apprentices will be assessed via:


Portfolio work based assessments

Engineering Assessor to review apprentices progression in sponsored company (help with support and mentoring)

End Point Assessments (final assessment for an apprentice to ensure that they can do the job they have been training for- Skills, Knowledge and Behaviour)
