An audit and
accounts trainee will typically be expected to carry out the following in their
first year of training:
Audits – 80-90%
Setting up audit files in the audit software (CaseWare).
Assistance with substantive audit testing and other audit work
under supervision
of more senior colleagues.
Assistance with planning and completion procedures under
supervision of more senior colleagues.
Involvement in audit planning meetings with the audit team and
taking minutes of the meeting.
Attendance at client stock takes as required.
Completing work to the fullest extent, obtaining sufficient and
appropriate audit evidence.
Apply a sceptical mindset and challenge documentation provided by
clients / third parties.
Seeking assistance from more senior staff as appropriate in order
to address problem areas to draw appropriate conclusions.
Ability to follow audit testing methodology and clearly document
objectives, methods, results and conclusions.
Completing disclosure checklists relevant to the audit engagement.
Ability to communicate and interact with client staff over emails,
telephone/video calls or in person at their premises as required.
Ability to work as part of an audit team, supporting
seniors/managers leading the engagements.
Drafting reports to management of audit findings and
representation letters.
Accounts -20-10%
(generally more in first year as a junior)
Learning the software used in the practice for accounts production
(CaseWare, Taxfiler), Advance (time and fees) and Excel.
Complete training on accounting software (Xero).
Formatting accounts in CaseWare.
Preparing schedules and reconciliations of account balances (for
example, Hire Purchase liabilities, bank reconciliations, review of trade
debtors).
Preparing micro-entity and small company accounts under
supervision, including relevant disclosures.
Compiling lists of queries for clients, and communicating with
clients as necessary.
Completing disclosure checklists.
Preparing accounts completion packs including final accounts,
closing balance adjustments and letters for manager review.
Preparing iXBRL’s for review by senior staff.
Filing simple accounts with Companies House.
Assist managers with submission of accounts preparation jobs to
outsourced service providers.
General
Liaising with staff in Payroll, Business Services and Tax teams as
required to complete accounts and audit work.
Assist with keeping a database of work.
Assist managers with chasing in work from clients.
Assist with reviewing client records for completeness and chasing
missing items.
Have knowledge of and adhere to money laundering procedures.
Follow office procedures and policies.
Confirmation of fit and properness, confidentiality of a client’s
affairs and independence from the clients.
Involvement in office team building activities.
