Description

About us

National Grid is at the heart of the energy future, and our people are at the heart of National Grid. We’re 30,000 colleagues strong. In the UK, National Grid don’t generate or sell energy – we join the dots to get energy from A to B. From making a cup of tea in the morning, to keeping the lights on in hospitals, our electricity network puts power in the hands of people. Without it, the world as we know it would grind to a halt.

The world of energy is changing beyond recognition as we focus on building a cleaner, greener future. Working at National Grid, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in the UK – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

Our values and principles

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of who we are and what we do. Our commitment to these values is unwavering and they are central to our mission. We encourage applications from all backgrounds, communities and industries and we are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments that you require.

About the role

National Grid Ventures (NGV) is our business area which focuses on energy ventures, including Interconnectors. Interconnectors play a key part in the UK’s energy industry, connecting us to our neighbouring countries and providing sustainable, flexible energy transmission. NGV currently owns and operates a portfolio of interconnectors and is in the process of constructing and developing a number of further interconnectors. As well as providing National Grid with strong financial performance, successful operation of these interconnectors offers the GB System Operator a greater diversity of supply, facilitates competition across Europe and helps address the intermittency issues posed by renewables.

The purpose of this role is to provide commercial support to the Interconnectors business to ensure efficient commercial operations and involvement in commercial projects to drive productivity and efficiency across our growing portfolio of interconnectors. Our commercial teams are business-critical teams covering a number of stages across our business from development through to operations, therefore, specific role objectives can be tailored to focus on key areas of personal and professional development whilst still enabling the graduate to deliver as part of the team.

Over the course of the graduate scheme it is expected that the graduate will gain a wide-ranging experience of the ever-evolving European energy market as well as the growing National Grid Ventures directorate, where the drive for commercial profitability, operational efficiency and risk management are key. This role will provide a unique opportunity to develop a wider perspective of the energy industry whilst gaining exposure to the operational, contract management, commercial, customer, regulation and financial areas of the business. There will be potential for you to work in a European environment developing professional relationships with people from different cultures both internally within Interconnectors and externally with our suppliers, customers and project partners.

This is an exciting time to join Interconnectors, we are at the forefront of solving the net zero conundrum by providing the capabilities to optimise renewable generation across Europe. Also, being involved in the reform of the energy market and making sure it is fit for purpose for decades to come. If this sounds like something that would interest and motivate you, now is the time to apply.

About you

To succeed in this role, you'll need strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, coupled with innovative thinking and effective communication skills in both writing and speaking. A genuine interest in the UK energy sector, its markets, and the ongoing energy transition is crucial. Additionally, you should be enthusiastic and fully committed to maximizing the opportunities provided by the Graduate Programme.

What you'll need

You'll need to achieve a 2.1 degree; however it doesn’t matter when you got this or if you are currently working towards it. We just need you to be eager to apply your knowledge in a real-world setting.
