Hiyield is looking for a new Apprentice Software Developer to join our fast paced Development team. We use many different technologies and work on a wide variety of different projects, from base PHP and JavaScript / Typescript up to more complicated frameworks such as WordPress and Nuxt 3, aiming to choose the best technology for each project. We have an established apprenticeship programme and several former apprentices within the development team who will mentor and support you in your development.

Description

Key Responsibilities:

- Work on new and existing client projects, across the full tech stack
(Includes frontend and backend programming in multiple web development languages)

- Help support the hosting infrastructure and providing system maintenance

- Assist clients with any issues that they may have and demonstrate system usage

Other Responsibilities/Duties:

- Keep documentation up to date and maintain existing documentation where needed

- Administrative tasks including but not limited to issues surrounding data security, database maintenance

- Research new technologies and how they could improve the developer and user experience

As you develop in your apprenticeship and with Hiyield we will be able to expose you to different projects and clients, giving you plenty of different creative experiences.

This role will be based in our central Truro office, with occasional home working.

Our apprentices are supported by many different people in our business. This role will have a former apprentice as a mentor and report to the Principal WordPress Developer.

  • Good understanding of HTML, CSS, and basic Javascript.
  • Experience in a server-side programming language such as PHP or Node.js.
  • Interaction with frameworks such as TailwindCSS, WordPress, or Vue / Nuxt.

  • GCSE Maths, English, and Science (Grades 4-9)

  • Level 3 equivalent in the computing field

Knowledge:

· All stages of the software development life-cycle (what each stage contains, including the inputs and outputs)

· Roles and responsibilities within the software development lifecycle (who is responsible for what)

· The roles and responsibilities of the project life-cycle within your organisation, and your role

· How best to communicate using the different communication methods and how to adapt appropriately to different audiences

· The similarities and differences between different software development methodologies, such as agile and waterfall.

· How teams work effectively to produce software and how to contribute appropriately

· Software design approaches and patterns, to identify reusable solutions to commonly occurring problems

· Organisational policies and procedures relating to the tasks being undertaken, and when to follow them. For example, the storage and treatment of GDPR sensitive data.

· Algorithms, logic and data structures relevant to software development for example: - arrays- stacks- queues- linked lists- trees- graphs- hash tables- sorting algorithms- searching algorithms- critical sections and race conditions

· Principles and uses of relational and non-relational databases • software designs and functional or technical specifications

· Software testing frameworks and methodologies

Skills:

· Create logical and maintainable code

· Conduct a range of test types, such as Integration, System, User Acceptance, Non-Functional, Performance and Security testing.
