Description

When you join British Sugar, you can expect a competitive starting salary of £23,877, which is reviewed annually. Additionally, you'll enjoy the benefit of 26 days holiday plus bank holidays. At British Sugar, we prioritise rewarding our employees for their dedication and contributions, ensuring a supportive and fulfilling work environment.

Please note, this role is known as Process Engineering Apprentice on the employer's website.

You will learn our unique process of producing refined sugar from sugar beet by using heat, cooling, pressure or a chemical/biochemical agent into an end product. You will also assist in the installation operation, planned preventative maintenance and repair of machinery such as pumps, turbines or compressors.

A 30-month learning programme, following the Science Manufacturing Technician Standard, achieving a Level 3 Process Technology qualification and all the practical experience alongside, to be ready to move into a Process Technician role. This is an exciting opportunity if you are career-minded with an interest in Science & Engineering and looking for a role being hands-on with industrial equipment and using the latest process control and computer automation technology.

Working from our Bury St Edmunds factory site, on a 12-hour shift pattern of 4 days at work and then 4 days not at work. This includes working some weekends and bank holidays.

This scheme gives you the opportunity to:

  • Learn how the key operational functions Extraction, Refinery, Pulp Management, Energy, Co-Products and Customer Supply work within our factories.
  • Gain a solid knowledge of our processes and equipment.
  • Understand our systems and procedures to work safely and efficiently.
  • Develop behavioural skills to be a great team member.

So, what does a day in the life of a Manufacturing Engineering apprentice look like at British Sugar?

Firstly, there are never two days the same but an average day looks like this:

  • 7.00am - I arrive on site, meet the team and go to the Control room and monitor the operation of the plant, sitting in front of multiple screens.
  • I can find out what has happened over the last 24 hours and problem solve with my colleagues and some of them have over 20 years of experience in the job! A great learning opportunity.
  • We then go out onto the plant to investigate any problems. Using our tablet we then check the equipment to make sure it is working properly in the real world and rectify any faults ourselves.
  • I will also carry out some laboratory analysis for control and quality. With it being a large industrial site, I can easily complete over 10,000 steps a day.
  • There are a number of routine maintenance tasks that I will complete, some of these are filter changes, plant checks and hands on repairs as needed.
  • There is always time to complete some of my apprenticeship work so that I keep up with logging my journals and recording my on-the-job training that all goes towards my apprenticeship.
  • It's now 7.30pm and my shift has finished and time to go home. Shifts are great, we work 4 days on, 4 days off pattern, which has a long break of 17 days. We also work some day patterns too, to carry out site maintenance and I really enjoy the flexibility of shift work.

It's a great 'hands on' role and the factory is the best chemistry set you will get to play with!

Opportunities with British Sugar

"British Sugar are renowned for their apprenticeship schemes. Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to learn without needing to go to university. You can still progress and achieve your goals without having a diploma! Whichever route you take after leaving school, an apprenticeship should be one of the options that is considered, especially if you aren’t fully set on university. For myself, I wanted to fully change my career and wanted a challenge I could really set my mind to. A lot of people don’t know what they want to do with their career and get discouraged when others have planned out their lives around university. The best piece of advice I could give is to give it a try!"
