About the Role
This apprenticeship follows the Embedded Electronic Systems Design and Development Engineer (Degree) Standard, leading to careers in designing and developing electronic circuits, devices, and systems.
As an Electronic Design Apprentice, your first two years of training will be spent at the Skills Academy, where you will work on several electronic projects. Alongside this, you will attend college part-time to complete your HNC. These projects will allow you to develop essential skills and knowledge in basic electronic theory, components, circuit design, construction, and reporting.
Following the initial phase, you will complete four 6-month placements at AWE over the next two years, while also working towards your HND.
In the final two years, after successfully completing the earlier stages, you will undertake further placements across the business. During this time, you will also work towards your Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (Degree phase).
Throughout your apprenticeship, you will attend lectures designed to enhance your understanding of electronic theory. Topics covered include:
- Component recognition
- Component characteristics
- Circuit calculations
- Semiconductor theory
- Fault-finding techniques
- Testing and measuring
This apprenticeship provides a comprehensive foundation in electronic design, preparing you for a dynamic and rewarding career.

These roles are governed by Health and Safety at Work
Regulations and require all candidates to have an Occupational Health
pre-employment medical held at AWE which follows the initial selection process. All
candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary
security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated
areas.
