AWE’s Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship offers the opportunity to gain a BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering while developing practical experience on real projects that support AWE’s operations and infrastructure.
As a Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice at AWE, you will:
- Work towards a BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering
- Attend university on day release while spending the rest of your time gaining hands-on experience at AWE (flexible to business requirements)
- Gain membership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
- Be enrolled on the ICE Training Scheme to work towards IEng status
- Develop your knowledge through inquiry-led learning and technology-based assessment
- Build an understanding of nuclear behavioural culture, safety, and security
- Engage with employer-focused, contextual learning content
During the apprenticeship, you’ll learn the fundamentals of construction practice, contract management, structural mechanics, hydraulics, geotechnics, highways, land surveying, and CAD. You’ll then apply this knowledge to assess existing structures, foundations, and soils through a combination of lectures and practical projects.
This role will suit those who:

- Are keen to learn and develop practical skills
- Want to apply engineering principles to real-world scenarios

Qualifications Required
- Applicants must be aged 18 or over, as of 31st August 2026 due to security clearance requirements
- You must be a British National to apply for a role with AWE
- Grade C/4 or above in at least five GCSE's including English and Maths
Plus one of the following:
- Three A Levels grade BBC - Must include Mathematics and a Science in either Chemistry or Physics (UCAS points: 112)
- T-level (Merit or above) in Construction: Design, Surveying and Planning. (UCAS points: 120)
- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma DDM in an Engineering subject area, with a minimum of merit in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. (UCAS points: 128)
- BTEC Level 3 National Diploma D*D* in an Engineering subject area, with a minimum of merit in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. (UCAS points: 112)
- Civil Engineering Technician level 3 apprenticeship DD (UCAS points: 96) alongside grade Pass or Distinction at EPA
Other Information
Please note: annual leave cannot be taken between 1st September and 2nd October 2026 due to mandatory inductions that form part of the apprenticeship programme. Any leave after this period will be subject to training provider requirements and must be approved in advance.
These roles are governed by Health and Safety at Work Regulations and require all candidates to have an Occupational Health pre-employment medical held at AWE which follows the initial selection process. All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas.
