Opportunity Details
During the 11-month internship, interns collaborate with teams across the organisation, gaining a solid understanding of London’s transport network and building skills in specialities such as Public Relations, Public Affairs and Marketing. Interns are based in one of three teams and have the opportunity to undertake a placement in another area:
The TfL Press Office is one of the UK's busiest press offices, where interns gain essential skills for a career in Public Relations. Interns handle major stories affecting TfL, deliver dedicated stories and campaigns, write press releases, deal with journalists, manage crises, generate ideas for high-profile campaigns and organise media events, including campaigns to tackle sexual harassment on public transport, Art on the Underground or Poppy Day.
The TfL Customer Directorate champions TfL’s customers through marketing, customer information, behaviour change and income-generating campaigns. Interns are involved in campaigns from start to finish, learn to use the best channels to inform customers and influence travel behaviours, and use customer feedback, research and data to solve customer frustrations and provide best-in-class customer experience and information.
TfL External Relations includes Government Relations and Stakeholder, Advocacy & Engagement, responsible for building and maintaining partnerships with customer and representative groups, businesses, charities, politicians and others. Interns develop relationships with key stakeholders, monitor events and third-party positions on transport and related issues, respond to casework, ensure feedback informs policy and service improvements, and brief senior TfL officials for meetings, events and speeches.
Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s ethos, with communications teams playing a pivotal role in telling this story.

Qualifications Required
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by the internship start date. They must be either a graduate with a minimum 2:2 in any degree, or an undergraduate on track to achieve this, OR a non-graduate with no more than one year’s paid experience in the communications industry (public relations, public affairs, marketing, stakeholder engagement, media, or related fields). Applications are sought from candidates with specific protected characteristics: from Black, Asian or other minority ethnic backgrounds and/or people with a disability (as defined by the Equality Act 2010) and/or individuals from a disadvantaged socio-economic background.
Training
Interns receive a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements, as well as a combination of training, mentoring and networking. One-to-one guidance is provided throughout the programme by a placement manager (responsible for day-to-day management and development), a scheme sponsor (a senior manager acting as technical and professional adviser), a buddy (usually a previous intern or graduate), and a development adviser (providing career coaching and progression support at TfL).
Personal Qualities
TfL seeks individuals who are motivated to learn and gain experience, passionate about a career in communications, public relations, marketing or public affairs, and team players who thrive on working with others as well as independently.
Prospects
The programme has a strong track record of success, with interns progressing to roles in both public and private sector organisations, including senior positions in the NHS, Network Rail, Government Communication Service, the Arts Council and TfL.
Other Information
The application process consists of five steps, including online assessments to be completed within an allocated time frame. It is highly recommended that applicants read the document thoroughly to familiarise themselves with the process. A link is provided describing each stage of the Graduates Application Process: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/careers/how-to-apply-for-apprentice-and-graduate-roles?intcmp=66755
If qualification certificates are already held, copies should be uploaded to the application. If final exams are due to be sat or certificates need to be replaced, these must be provided at a later stage. Information and guidance are provided at each assessment stage as the application progresses. Applicants must pay close attention to emails and deadlines, noting there is one week to complete online assessments and these tests cannot be re-issued once the deadline passes.
Assessment centres for graduates and intern roles take place from December to January. Many roles only have one assessment day and alternative dates cannot be guaranteed. Assessment centres are conducted in person and virtually, depending on the role.
TfL is a Disability Confident employer and operates a transparent recruitment process that removes barriers for candidates with a disability. Reasonable adjustments can be requested for any stage of the application process or, if successful, to undertake the internship. In high volume campaigns, including Graduate, Apprentice and Intern recruitment, the minimum criteria set is achieving a pass mark in the first stage assessments, adopting a proportionate approach as part of the Disability Confident scheme.
Only one application for any of the Graduate schemes per year is allowed; any subsequent applications will be withdrawn. Successful candidates must have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the scheme as at the start date. This role is not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa scheme.
The recruitment team can be contacted by phone at 0203 005 1680 (Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:30) or by email at EarlyCareersCampaigns@tfl.gov.uk.
