Opportunity Details

Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of the transport system. The graduate scheme emphasises developing mechanical engineers through meaningful problem-solving across multiple transport modes. Graduates collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams from across TfL, customers, local government, and the supply chain to deliver city-defining programmes and cutting-edge technology.
The two-year development programme consists of around eight placement rotations:

Year 1:

Placement 1: Rolling Stock Enhancements (3 months) – Working on major train upgrade projects, 3D Computer-Aided Design, developing, testing, and implementing solutions on vehicles.
Placement 2: Track Engineering (3 months) – Trialling new technologies, risk simulations, track inspections, reviewing new track layouts, and involvement with track maintenance work (often at night).
Placement 3: Lifts and Escalators Engineering (3 months) – Learning about safety standards, implementing technology updates, and reviewing system designs to create a more accessible network.
Placement 4: Depot Operational Engineering (3 months) – Based at a train maintenance depot, learning root-cause analysis, hands-on maintenance inspections, and implementing upgrades from the rolling stock design team.

Year 2:

Placement 5: Station Systems Engineering (3 months) – Delivering station power savings, Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations, and planning operational equipment layouts.
Placement 6: Project Sponsorship (3 months) – Leading stakeholder engagement with local government and defining requirements for projects relating to London’s Net Zero, Zero Harm, and Accessibility targets.
Placement 7: Major Projects (3 months) – Experiencing commercial aspects of Engineering at a pan-TfL level, including projects such as Bakerloo Line Upgrade, Cycle Superhighways, Bridges and Structures, and Tube Upgrades.
Placement 8: Building Services Engineering (3 months) – Focusing on local station upgrades, implementing and maintaining step-free access schemes, and planning for bus station accommodation upgrades.

Towards the end of the scheme, graduates will have experienced enough of the TfL Engineering Directorate to understand which asset area they would prefer to roll off into and submit their preferences. After moving into a permanent role, further support will continue to be available from IMechE accredited mentors until Chartership.

Other Information

The application process consists of 5 steps, including online assessments to be completed within an allocated time frame. It is highly recommended that the document is read thoroughly to familiarise with the process. If qualification certificates are already held, copies should be uploaded to the application.
