Opportunity Details

In Bus Operations, the team is responsible for the largest single provider of public transport journeys in London, delivering safe, reliable, and accessible bus, coach, and assisted transport networks. The key areas of delivery include London’s entire bus network, On Demand Transport, and Victoria Coach Station.

The internship consists of a 12-week development programme made up of at least six placements, designed to introduce participants to a range of skills and experiences needed for a successful career. Each intern’s journey is unique and placements are tailored to the needs and interests of the interns. The structure includes:

Placement 1: Bus Safety Development Team
The participant supports the implementation of Vision Zero initiatives aimed at eliminating fatalities and serious injuries on the bus network and assists in analysing safety data to identify trends and recommend improvements.

Placement 2: Bus Customer Action Plan Team
The participant collaborates on projects to improve the customer experience, such as enhancing bus interiors and developing accessible facilities, and conducts customer satisfaction research.

Placement 3: Zero Emission Fleet Team
The participant contributes to the roll-out of zero-emission buses by supporting project planning and logistics and works with the engineering team to evaluate the environmental impact and performance of new vehicles.

Placement 4: Operational Placement
The participant gains hands-on experience by working alongside network traffic controllers to help manage live incidents and support real-time diversions, assists bus station controllers and garage teams in daily operations, and supports operational teams in maintaining bus station efficiency.

Placement 5: Victoria Coach Station House
The participant works directly with operational managers to gain first-hand experience in managing Europe’s largest coach terminus, including coach scheduling, passenger flow coordination, and operational problem-solving.

Placement 6: Dial-a-Ride
The participant gets hands-on experience in journey scheduling and service coordination for customers with limited mobility and works alongside drivers and operations staff to understand the logistics of delivering door-to-door transport services.

Placements are designed to be flexible and align with each intern’s career aspirations and goals, ensuring participants gain the most value from their placement while contributing meaningfully to the bus and coach industry.
