Opportunity Details

The scheme is designed to equip graduates with a broad range of skills and experience through up to eight placement rotations over two years. Graduates work on fire strategy reports, install new systems, carry out inspections, complete fire risk assessments, and review project designs across the TfL network, including DLR, the Victoria Line, and commercial properties.

Example projects include:

  • Bank Station Capacity Upgrade (new platform and station box)
  • Crossrail (fire strategy and assurance)
  • Silvertown Tunnel (design of fire protection systems)
  • Electric Bus Fire Risk Analysis
  • Victoria Coach Station (fire safety system upgrades)

Typical placements:


  • Asset Operations (3 months): Exposure to fire protection systems and equipment, site-based and desktop approaches, and periodic inspections with the London Fire Brigade.
  • Fire Precautions and Compliance (3 months): Understanding fire safety measures and fire plans for various structures.
  • Places for London (1.5–3 months): Working with TTLP (commercial property side of TfL) to review and produce technical documents such as Fire Strategy Reports and Fire Risk Assessments.

Graduates must complete three core placements (two recommended for three months each, one for 1.5–3 months) and can choose additional placements based on preferences and specialisation.

Skills Required

  • Technical proficiency in fire engineering or related disciplines
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience or interest in fire strategy, risk assessment, and system design
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to diverse projects

Qualifications Required

  • A minimum of a 2:2 degree accredited by a body registered with the Engineering Council (e.g., IFE/IEI/CIBSE) or EU equivalent, in Fire Engineering/Fire Safety Engineering or a closely related subject such as Structural or Mechanical
  • Engineering with fire-specific modules.
  • Candidates must have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the scheme. The role is not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa scheme.

Training

TfL provides on-the-job practical experience, training, mentoring, and networking. Graduates receive one-to-one guidance from a placement manager, scheme sponsor (senior manager), buddy (apprentice or graduate), and development adviser/mentor (career coaching and progression).

Prospects

Upon completion, graduates are expected to join a fire engineering team at TfL, taking on increasing responsibility and progressively building core competence. Career paths include engineering management roles on national projects or leading discipline engineering teams.

  • Only one application per year is allowed for any TfL graduate scheme.
  • The application process consists of five steps, including online assessments to be completed within allocated time frames.
  • Applicants should upload qualification certificates to their application; pending certificates must be provided later.
  • Assessment centres for graduates and interns take place from December to January, often with only one assessment day per role. Centres are conducted in person and virtually, depending on the role.
