Construction Development Programme (CDP) - Trainee Associate Project Manager

Ready to take your project management skills to the next level - and into the world of construction? Our CDP Trainee Associate Project Manager role is a fantastic opportunity to reskill and grow within a major infrastructure organisation that values its people and their potential.

Please note: This is not a graduate or apprenticeship scheme. If you're looking for those opportunities, please visit the National Grid Careers Website to explore our dedicated programmes.

Why Join This Programme?

This paid 18-month reskilling scheme is designed for individuals with at least one year of experience in project management or a similar role. You'll gain:

  • Hands-on experience managing real construction projects.
  • Industry-recognised qualifications including APM PFQ and PMQ and NEBOSH.
  • A strong foundation for a long-term career in the energy and construction sectors.
  • A supportive, inclusive environment where your development is a priority.

By the end of the programme, you'll be ready to step into a permanent role as an Associate Project Manager, with a portfolio of work you're proud of and a clear path forward. You'll be welcomed into a positive, inclusive organisation that aims to become one of the most diverse, equitable and inclusive companies of the 21st century.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Trainee Associate Project Manager, you'll help deliver critical infrastructure projects - from planning through to completion. You'll:

  • Lead or support the delivery of construction projects, ensuring they meet time, cost, and quality targets.
  • Engage with stakeholders and customers to ensure satisfaction and resolve issues.
  • Manage project documentation, governance, and reporting.
  • Oversee risk management, financial forecasting, and contractor performance.
  • Ensure compliance with Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations and SHESQ standards.

This is a mobile role requiring regular travel to sites across the region. A full UK driving licence is essential, and you'll be provided with a company car (mandatory for the role; subject to BIK tax, no cash alternative).

Who We're Looking For

You'll need one of the following qualifications plus at least one year of relevant experience in project management or a similar role:

  • HNC/HND, ONC or BTEC Level 3 in Health & Safety, Environmental, Business/Project Management, or Financial Management
  • Degree in any of the above fields
  • Other subjects may be considered if you have GCSEs in Maths and English

Expect to cover over 10,000 miles annually across our regions in England and Wales (North, Central or Southern Regions). You'll be onsite for up to five days a week, which may include overnight stays in pre-booked accommodation. In addition to your site travels, you'll also attend classroom training at our training centre in Eakring, Newark, requiring some overnight stays away from home during the training period.

Locations Available

Please select one location preference when applying:

  • North - North West (Manchester, Liverpool, Macclesfield), North East (Sheffield, Leeds, Chesterfield, Lincoln), Sunderland.
  • Central - Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Stevenage, Norwich, Bury St. Edmunds, Chelmsford.
  • London/South - London, M4 corridor (Bristol to Reading), Didcott, Iver, South Wales (Port Talbot).

Important: You can only apply for one CDP scheme and your application may be withdrawn if multiple applications are made. If you're interested in our graduate/apprenticeship schemes, please apply via our Careers Website. Please be aware we have a number of career change and/or reskilling roles in other fields such as Project Supervisor, Project Manager, Development Engineer, Quantity Surveying etc - should we feel you're better suited to another role you may be offered this as an alternative.

  • Starting salary: £39,000
  • Salary at programme end: Up to £47,442
  • Company car (mandatory for role)
  • Pension contribution up to 18%
