Job DescriptionConstruction Development Programme (CDP) - Trainee Project Supervisor

Looking to take your career in a bold new direction? Our CDP Trainee Project Supervisor role offers a unique opportunity to reskill into a hands-on, site-based role within the construction industry.

Important: This is not a graduate or apprenticeship scheme. If you're looking for those opportunities, please visit the National Grid Careers Website to explore our dedicated programmes.

Why Join This Programme?

This paid 18-month reskilling scheme is designed to give you:

  • Real-world experience across major infrastructure projects.
  • Industry-recognised qualifications including NEBOSH, SMSTS, and CQI Quality in Construction.
  • A strong foundation for a long-term career in construction.
  • A supportive, inclusive environment where your growth matters.

By the end of the programme, you'll be a fully trained Project Supervisor, ready to take on site-based responsibilities and contribute to the safe, high-quality delivery of our projects. You'll be welcomed into a positive, inclusive organisation that aims to become one of the most diverse, equitable and inclusive companies of the 21st century.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Trainee Project Supervisor, you'll be our eyes and ears on the ground - ensuring contractors meet our safety, quality, and schedule expectations. You'll:

  • Monitor contractor safety and performance.
  • Conduct site inspections and approve/reject materials and workmanship.
  • Coordinate site access and maintain site diaries.
  • Review risk assessments and method statements.
  • Oversee construction activities like cable pulling, battery energy storage systems, and more.
  • Visit iconic sites such as the London Power Tunnels and Snowdonia's Electric Mountain.

This is a site-based role, often outdoors in all weather conditions, and involves extensive travel. A full UK driving licence is essential, and you'll be provided with a company car (mandatory for the role; subject to BIK tax, no cash alternative).

Who We're Looking For

You'll need one of the following qualifications plus relevant work experience in construction, engineering, military, or operational roles:

  • HNC/HND, ONC or BTEC Level 3 in a construction/engineering discipline
  • Degree in engineering, construction or project management
  • NEBOSH Level 3
  • SMSTS

Expect to cover over 10,000 miles annually across our regions in England and Wales (North or Central Regions). You'll be onsite for up to five days a week, which may include overnight stays in pre-booked accommodation. In addition to your site travels, you'll also attend classroom training at our training centre in Eakring, Newark, requiring some overnight stays away from home during the training period.

Locations Available

Please select one location preference when applying:

  • North - North Wales, North West, North East, North East Sheffield, Doncaster, Leeds, Newcastle, Sunderland, York, Middlesborough, Hull, Lincolnshire.
  • Central - East Midlands, Staffordshire/Derbyshire, Bury St Edmunds, Norfolk.

Please note: You can only apply for one CDP scheme and your application may be withdrawn if multiple applications are made. If you're interested in our graduate/apprenticeship schemes, please apply via our Careers Website. Please be aware we have a number of career change and/or reskilling roles in other fields such as Project Manager, Quantity Surveyor, Development Engineer etc - should we feel you're better suited to another role you may be offered this as an alternative.

What's in it for you?
  • Starting salary: £39,000
  • Salary at programme end: Up to £47,442
  • Company car (mandatory for role)
  • Pension contribution up to 18%
  • 26 days annual leave + bank holidays (with buy/sell options)
  • Industry-recognised qualifications
