Merchant Navy ratings carry out a wide range of jobs to help the day-to-day running of a ship.
Employers will expect you to have good practical skills, enthusiasm for the career and the potential to complete ratings training. You may also find it useful if you have qualifications and experience in: catering, engineering, freight handling or navigation.

You could progress to the ranks of leading hand, petty officer and chief petty officer. With the necessary skills and experience, you could take further training to join the junior officer ranks. You could also use your skills to move into onshore engineering or a hospitality and catering career.
Helicopter pilots fly single- and multi-engined helicopters for business, leisure or emergency services.
Tram drivers take passengers to and from destinations, following a set timetable.
Probation officers supervise people serving community and prison sentences and help them to stay away from crime.
Fingerprint officers work to identify fingerprints taken from crime scenes.
Civil enforcement officers make sure drivers follow parking regulations on public streets and in car parks.
Airline pilots fly passengers and cargo to destinations around the world.

The apprenticeship is delivered in stores across Birmingham, Hertfordshire, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Sheffield and it takes a minimum of 12 months to complete. Youll spend time doing a range of activities from completing learning on a tablet device you’re provided with, to putting in to practice your learning on the shop floor.
