When leaving school or college it can be a daunting time when thinking about what your next big step in the world will be. As time goes by, it can feel although the pressure is building, and you have to make rash decisions – frantically clicking the “Apply” button in a desperate attempt to find an apprenticeship, but this isn’t always the best way; sometimes it does the exact opposite.
We know how frustrating it can be when you apply for lots of jobs, but you don’t always get the role, or sometimes even a response – finding a job is definitely full-time work! So, we’re going to take you through what you should start doing in the search for your dream career, but also, perhaps, what you should stop.
Although you may think that the more roles you put yourself forward for the more likely you are to be successful, this unfortunately isn’t always the case. If you have not read the particulars of the apprenticeship and do not understand what it entails, it can be easy to tell for employers.
What you would be better off doing is thoroughly looking through fewer adverts and examining the following:
- The daily duties- Future prospects- Employer description.
If you have read these sections and have a sound understanding of the role, it gives a better impression and implies you are truly interested.
Also, rather than applying for lots of roles in different sectors just to try and secure yourself a job, it would be better to apply for specific apprenticeships that you're actually interested in. Normally as that’s what you want to do we can tell that you’re enthusiastic and have matching qualities to fit the position!
Making your GetMyFirstJob Profile relevant to the role you have applied for will also make your application stand out. Filling out your profile well, with sector or job related information (if you have some), will indicate to recruiters you know what you have applied for and you have that knowledge and understanding already. If you do not have the experience, this is not a major issue. Having just finished your studies, we're not expecting you to have years of job specific experience – it’s you that we want to know about!
Here are our top tips for applying for apprenticeships –
- Read the advert and understand what you have applied for. - Have a reason why you are interested in the role; what drew you to this role specifically? - Think of examples how your past experiences can relate to the role you applied for. - Check the distance of the apprenticeship – can you get there? If so, how?
At GetMyFirstJob, we try our best to make applying for apprenticeship roles as easy and comfortable as we can for you. We are here to help and want to help you take your first step in your career.
