The John Lewis Partnership is the UK’s largest employee owned business and parent company of two cherished retail brands - John Lewis and Waitrose, which are owned in Trust by over 74,000 Partners.

Over 100 years ago their Founder, John Spedan Lewis, began an experiment into a better way of doing business by including staff (now known as Partners) in decision making on how the business would be run.

Spedan Lewis wanted to create a way of doing business that was both commercial, allowing it to move quickly and stay ahead in a highly-competitive industry, and democratic, giving every Partner a voice in the business they co-own. This combination, so ahead of its time, continues to make them what they are today.

At JLP, they have 5 core values that are integral to their organisation:

Do Right
We act with integrity and use our judgement to do the right thing for our people, business and world.

All or nothing
We put our all into everything that we do to ensure the Partnership thrives for generations to come.

Give more than you take
We all share knowledge, profit and power to make the Partnership a better place for everyone. We're always ready to go the extra mile.

Be yourself. Always
We're proud and at our best when we are free to be ourselves. We all help to create an inclusive environment, treating everyone with kindness and respect.

We not me
As co-owners, we all work together as one. We face challenging times together as well as the good and always have the Partnerships best intentions in mind, not just our own.

"I joined the Partnership at 16, working weekends whilst at college. I've since completed 2 apprenticeships, fulfilled management positions in both Waitrose and John Lewis stores, and most recently secured a Head Office role within Learning and Development." JLP are on a journey, an ongoing experiment to find happier, more trusted ways of doing business and all of their Partners have a part to play.

By joining the Partnership you join a different kind of business. One that seeks to make a difference, not just to its Partners, but to the lives of everyone.

It’s this shared purpose that drives them and they believe that by working together, in Partnership, they can help create a place with happier people, for a happier business and a happier world.

But do you know all the ways you could be a part of JLP?

Apprenticeships
They've developed a market-leading apprenticeship programme that enables Partners to learn whilst ‘on-the-job’ in the Partnership. On completion of their programmes you’ll achieve a nationally recognised apprenticeship qualification, helping you lay the foundations to a successful career. They currently have 29 schemes in total and these range across different business areas including: Data, AI, Leadership, Finance, HR, Supply Chain, Retail, Hospitality.

Industrial Placement
Industrial Placements at the John Lewis Partnership have been carefully designed to give you involvement on real-time projects, more opportunities to show what you’re capable of and to develop your skills, and to give you plenty of responsibility to help prepare you for coping with real life working environments. After successfully completing the placement scheme and finishing university JLP hope Placement students will rejoin the business once again through a graduate scheme or advertised role. In 2023, industrial placements included opportunities within Agricultural Strategy, Digital Marketing, Buying, Product Design, Human Resources and Hospitality among many more.

T-Levels
T-Levels are Level 3 classroom based qualifications (equivalent to 3 A Levels) taken after GCSEs, designed by employers and providers to prepare students for entry into skilled employment, apprenticeship or technical study. They have a placement within industry for a minimum of 315 hours or 45 days during term time, one day a week. JLP have been offering T-Level placements to 16-19 year olds in their Finance Team for the past 3 years. Students are undertaking a 2 year course in Business Management & Administration at Activate Learning (Bracknell and Wokingham College). On completion, students are eligible to apply for a permanent position in the Partnership and enter onto an Apprenticeship programme at Level 4 or above. JLP are researching introducing T-Level placements in further business functions over the next 2 years.
