Describe your job and what you do on a day-to-day basis

In my current rotation within the Financial Control team at Costa Coffee, every day is unique - shaped by the financial cycle and the ever-evolving dynamics of the coffee industry. I calculate accruals, adjustments, and pre-payments for various cost centres to ensure our accounts accurately represent our financial position. Beyond the numbers, I also translate our financial data into clear insights for senior stakeholders and am involved in enhancing our insight into balance sheet reconciliations and financial controls. At Costa, there are always projects available outside your area, offering further opportunities to dive in and expand your knowledge!

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

The highlight of my career so far has been the Innovation Kitchen Day at Costa Coffee, a venture that differed from my usual financial responsibilities. Witnessing firsthand how a simple flavour idea evolves from a concept on paper to a tangible product, and seeing how literal chemistry plays a pivotal role in achieving the perfect balance of taste and consistency, was fascinating. Making drinks was challenging yet incredibly fun, offering a unique blend of creativity and precision. Watching people's reactions to trying my drink was amusing—it was a mix of them loving it or not!

What has been the biggest challenge of your career so far?

The biggest challenge in my career at Costa Coffee has been the constant learning curve associated with mastering new financial systems for various innovative projects and different areas of the business. Each system comes with its unique set of rules and requirements, making it a demanding yet enriching experience. Despite the complexity, the support from my team has been exceptional, providing me with the resources and encouragement needed to navigate these challenges successfully. Additionally, adapting to the rigours of working full-time while completing my financial qualification has tested my time management and dedication. Balancing professional responsibilities with exam. Although difficult, the support provided through the apprenticeship program has been invaluable, ensuring I have the guidance and resources to succeed.

Is there anything you’d like to share that you think might inspire or interest someone looking at starting their career journey?

Jumping into your career post-university can be daunting, but my advice is simple: just start. Procrastination won't reveal whether a path suits you - only action will. As a finance graduate, stepping into the real world was transformative. With outstanding support and the right resources, I quickly learnt the ropes while working towards a professional qualification. Embrace every challenge and project; these experiences are invaluable. They don’t just build your skill set—they grow your confidence. Remember, questions are your best tool, and involvement is your greatest teacher. This journey is about finding your stride in a world brimming with opportunities.
