Detailed Job Description

Job Outline

  • To work with the SENCO, Behaviour Support Manager and class teachers as appropriate supporting pupils with identified additional needs within the early years’ setting.
  • To provide support for pupils in a variety of settings including in class, on the playground and in the Nurture Suite.
  • To supervise and develop good social skills with the pupil outside of classroom times such as over lunch and playtimes following the schools agreed policies.
  • To support identified pupils with developing their skills in accordance with their individual behaviour and education plans.
  • To liaise with other members of the teaching and behaviour management team to ensure good continuity of care and standards and achievement.

    Main Duties

    • Support the Teaching Staff and Behaviour Support Staff in the planning and delivery of a personal, social and emotional curriculum for the pupils identified as needing additional support and intervention.
    • Use appropriate strategies to manage challenging behaviour displayed by pupils, this may include use of appropriate physical restraint.
    • Work with the Teaching Staff and Behaviour Support Staff in developing and sustaining effective additional support and intervention for pupils both within the school and within the Nurture Suite.
    • Ensure that the learning environment for pupils is a safe, appropriate, and stimulating learning environment.
    • Co-operate with the Teaching Staff in the planning and delivery of the curriculum when working within the classroom, including any support or extension programmes as appropriate, following training if required.
    • Using systems detailed by the class teachers, feedback information about pupils’ performance and behaviour.
    • Support the Teaching Staff in the organisation and preparation of visual supports and other resources as appropriate.
    • Uphold any agreed school policies, particularly those concerning safeguarding, learning and behaviour and welfare.
    • Supervise and develop play with identified pupils and other children at break times, following school guidance on times, behaviour, use of apparatus and safety.
    • Accompany pupils on off-site activities when appropriate.
    • When needed, participate in some basic first aid training and administer first aid treatment as necessary and within appropriate guidelines.

    Miscellaneous Duties

    • Carry out any other similar duties appropriate to your role as directed by the Headteacher at Arreton St. George’s CE Primary or at our partner Federation School, Oakfield CE Primary.

    Requirements and Prospects

    Qualifications required

    GCSE in Maths and English (A-E) or equivalent

    Future prospects

    If the apprentice proves successful with his/her duties, the role may be expanded once the apprenticeship is over.

    Additional Information

    Training provided

    Training will be provided by Training Associates providing the successful apprentice with an NVQ Level 2/3 in Support Teaching and Learning.

    Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.30 per hour (From October 1st 2016 this will be increasing by 3% to £3.40 per hour). This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
