If you like the idea of making shopping more enjoyable for people and can get along with a wide variety of different customers, a sales assistant job could be just right for you. There are lots of places you could work as a sales assistant. You’ll find these mainly on your local high street or in a Shopping Centre. Most employers will be more interested in your ability to work with people and in your positive attitude than your formal qualifications. However, you will need a good standard of math’s and English as you may be handling cash, checking and ordering stock and speaking and listening to the needs of your customers. To be a good sales assistant it’s important that you’re able to work as part of a team and that you’re helpful, friendly and polite. You also need to be reliable, honest and responsible.

1. Serving and speaking to customers

2. Helping customer to find and buy the right products

3. Handling cash, taking card payments and balancing a til

4. Stocking shelves and displaying goods

5. Completing stock takes to monitor levels of existing stock

6. Ordering replacement stock

7. Promoting special offers or store cards

8. Arranging window displays

9. Dealing with customer complaints

10. Keeping the shop clean and tidy

Qualifications required

Although no formal qualifications are required a good level of English and Maths would be preferable.

Future prospects

Although this is a level 2 Apprenticeship it will start as a 12 week Traineeship and successful completion of this will then lead onto the full apprenticeship. By following this vocational route you have the opportunity to progress and train towards qualifications, such as:

· Level 2 Certificate/Diploma in Retail Skills

· Level 2 Certificate/Diploma in Retail Knowledge

· Level 3 Diploma in Retail Skills (Management)

Completion of these qualifications may allow you to progress and apply for jobs in Retail Management.
