We are located in the heart of the London Colney village and are housed on spacious grounds with lots of resources.

Detailed Job Description

The Sports Assistant will play a significant role in the coaching of sport in the school and will work closely with teachers within lessons and coaching across a number of different sporting activities. They will be expected to be available at all times that the school sport takes place, including before and after school.

This role will be to support the SLT in the effective spending of the Sports Premium Funding to improve pupil outcomes and their participation in sports.

There main responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with PE lessons with respect to setting up for the lesson and co-ordinating the warm up.
  • Being pro-active within the lesson, by listening to teaching points given by the staff member in charge and helping with correction detail in terms of body position, grip, etc. This will include taking smaller groups to differentiate the activities to support their skill levels.
  • Responsibility for closing down the lesson, ensuring that equipment is put away.
  • Responsibility for all the PE stores, ensuring that they are kept tidy and ready for the next user.
  • Stock-take of equipment at the end of each term.
  • During the sports sessions you will be linked to a particular activity to assist with the running of and coaching of the activity. This will usually be linked to your area of speciality.
  • The opportunity for you to accompany various school trips and various sporting events, specifically in coordinating participation in all the sports partnership sporting events.
  • To follow all the school’s policies, guidelines and codes of practice.
  • To work with the HT/DHT/Subject Leader to monitor the quality of provision in PE
  • To run extra-curricular sporting activities
  • To monitor pupil participation in clubs
  • Improve competitive sport provision.
  • Improve links with local schools to help with competitive sport and physical activity provision.
  • Increase physical activity levels within the school.
  • Assist with the improvement of staff development within the area of PE and school sport.
  • Contribute to the planning of lessons and work programmes and the devising of suitable activities.
  • Support the teaching and learning of individual or groups of pupils, using support strategies appropriate to the needs of pupils, providing feedback and liaising over problems.
  • Assist teachers in the evaluation and revision of lessons and work programmes for individuals and groups of pupils and contribute to the monitoring, recording and assessment of pupil progress.
  • Contribute to the development of a purposeful working atmosphere promoting fair play and good sporting behaviour.

Alongside these responsibilities, the sports apprentice may be required to attend staff meetings / briefings to update them / inform them of educational or school updates. The apprentice will be provided with a school email address, whereby they will be contacted daily with updates / key messages.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

Minimum of GCSE grade A*-C (or equivalent) in English Language and Maths

Level 2 qualification in sport/PE/activity leadership or equivalent

Skills required

  • Strong sporting background
  • Experience of coaching/working with children
  • Good organisational skills

Future prospects

We are seeking to appoint a Sports coaching apprentice who may take on further responsibilities with regards to leading and managing areas of sporting provision in school. We’re looking for a Sports Coaching Apprentice to become part of the team in our friendly, successful primary school. This role would be ideal for someone who either wanted to move into sports coaching with children & young people, or someone wanted to work in school – possibly as a teaching assistant/HLTA or possibly longer term as a route towards teacher training.

Training provided

Intermediate Apprenticeship Level 2 Activity Leadership.

All learning will be done in the workplace; you may need to attend the occasional workshop in College. If you need to complete Functional Skills, you will be required to attend College once a week for at least the first 3 months. Apprentices without Maths or English at level 1 must achieve this level and take the test for level 2 Maths and English before the end of the apprenticeship.

The successful candidate may be required to contribute to the wider school life e.g. attending trips, supporting pupils in class, supporting events within school. Candidates should be aware that there will be periods of time during summer months that the role will include outside work.
