An exciting opportunity has arisen for an aspiring an Accountant to join Wesleyan whilst studying the ACCA or CIMA qualification via an apprenticeship. The successful applicant will get to experience all areas of the department including Accounting Operations, Financial Reporting and Financial Planning.

Detailed Job Description

You will be part of the team that undertakes all financial work for the Wesleyan group, including the planning of yearly budgets, and producing reports for the Executive Team. As an apprentice, you will develop your accounting skills through:

  • Gaining experience working in different teams across Group Finance (see below)
  • Studying towards a professional accountancy qualification (CIMA or ACCA), as part of a comprehensive apprenticeship training package provided by an industry leader

The Group Finance area contains finance staff ranging from qualified accountants with a number of years’ post-qualification experience to finance administrators. The area undertakes all finance work for the Wesleyan Group.

Each team member is given work and responsibility in line with their ability and experience, and can expect a challenging and flexible working environment with frequent opportunities to learn new skills and widen experience. A large proportion of the apprentice time will be spent working with PC applications. The Group Finance teams are:

Accounting Operations

  • Provide support on all income, payment and investment transactions for the Society and relevant subsidiaries.
  • Maintain effective, auditable controls over transactions, minimising risk and ensuring that monies received and paid are reconcilable to the Society’s nominal ledger.

Financial Accounts

  • Produce annual statutory accounts for the Society and its subsidiaries, and quarterly Solvency II regulatory reporting.
  • Maintain strong financial controls, including regular balance sheet reconciliations.

Financial Reporting

  • Produce timely, well controlled Group Financial Reporting MI for the Executive and Board; ·
  • Analyse the income, costs and profitability of each Business Unit.

Financial Planning

  • Produce quarterly profit forecasts, annual budgets and strategic plans for the Group.
  • Support the financial aspects of the Group’s transformation agenda.

Finance Change

  • Provide finance support for projects, providing business requirements and robust testing of new systems and processes to ensure a smooth integration of change into BAU.
  • Lead the continuous improvement of Group Finance business processes.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at A-C grade, including Maths and English

3 A Levels A-C (or equivalent)

Skills required

Good problem solving and data analysis skills; Strong organisational skills; Ability to work effectively and flexibly as part of a team; Excellent attention to detail.

Personal Qualities

Good interpersonal and communication skills; Positive approach to work with an excellent customer ethos;

Future prospects

Following successful completion of the scheme, you can expect to be placed in a permanent role.

Foundations in Accountancy is a suite of accountancy awards from ACCA for those wanting to start a career in accounting and finance. If you are a recent school leaver, have no accounting experience or do not have the required academic standard to begin ACCA you should start on the FIA route.


CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting gives you fundamental knowledge of business and accountancy. You must pass all four exams to gain the Cert BA qualification. On successful completion you can opt to progress onto the CIMA Professional qualification and subsequently become a qualified Management Accountant.
