Apprentice Outboard Technician

The Boat and Outboard Centre
The Boat and Outboard Centre are looking to recruit an Engineering Apprentice to join the team. You will be assisting in the maintenance and repair of boat engines and outboards. Occasionally you will also need to help in the shop and with customer queries.

The Boat & Outboard Centre is part of a family owned and operated business established in 1974. The workshop was expanded when we acquired Martin Yates Marine in 2009, formerly based in Galgate, and moved the business to our new modern workshop & showroom at Bridge House Marina in Garstang, when the name was changed to The Boat and Outboard Centre and it became part of the Bridge House Marina group. The highly qualified & certificated engineers were retained and along with Bridge House Marina staff we now have boating & marina experience of a combined 160 years.

Detailed Job Description

While servicing on the 2 stroke and 4 stroke boats and outboard engines some of the duties you will be completing are; oil changes, diagnostics and checking/changing spark plugs. You will need to order parts when required and diagnose faults. You will also have the opportunity to complete full engine re-builds as well as dismantling engines and storing parts.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

  • 4 GCSE’s at grades A*- D including Maths and English (or equivalent).
  • You must achieve a score of at least Level 1 on the online college Initial Assessment’s in English, Maths and IT.

Skills required

  • You will need to be practically minded and have the ability to diagnose faults in motors.
  • You will need to be able to listen and follow instructions.
  • You will need to be IT literate as you will be required to order parts from main dealer web sites.

Personal Qualities

You will need to be confident as you will be in direct contact with customers. You should be trustworthy and presentable.

Future prospects

A full time position may be available at the end of the apprenticeship

Additional Information

Training provided

You will work towards completing the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Engineering.

This job role may include lifting and handling of heavy items.
