Detailed Job Description

The suitable applicant will:


Maintaining security of the building and the exhibits on display.


Ensure the safety of the general public and evacuating the building in the event of a fire or security alert.

First Aid duties (training provided).


Providing information and helping visitors to the Museum & Art Gallery and Library.

Collecting visitor data and providing feedback about the visitor experience and response

Serve customers of Harris Café and/or Museum Shop and selling exhibition merchandise.

Assisting visitors with disabilities as required.


Dusting and cleaning exhibits, stores and other cleaning duties.

Assisting Library staff as required.

Assisting with the transportation and moving of exhibits, the installation of exhibitions, setting up equipment including humidifiers, audio visual, and monitoring equipment (with appropriate training).

Other Duties/Responsibilities

To act as a representative of the organisation to visitors of all descriptions, including emergency services.

To liaise with office based colleagues and carry out relevant duties in support of other departments.

To attend training sessions as required.

To attend meetings and support the museums aims and objectives.

To support the Operations Department objectives of developing its services and enabling Visitor Services Assistants to perform a more flexible role. Enforcing by laws of Preston Borough Council.

Due to the nature of the work undertaken, the successful applicant will be required to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

Minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade D or above including English or equivalent

Skills required

Excellent communication and people skills

A confident and positive attitude

Word processing skills

Good verbal communication and listening skills

Ability to follow instructions and organise yourself to complete tasks fully and on time

Ability to use initiative to think through problems to find solutions

Literate with good written communication Ability to check for accuracy and give attention to detail

Ability to answer, speak confidently and take messages on the phone

Knowledge of spread sheets, word processing and databases

Ability to use initiative

Calm under pressure

Personal Qualities

The ability to work as an individual as well as part of a team and be respectful to team members at all times. Be an excellent communicator at all levels, via telephone and face to face. Be able to use their own initiative.
